Women’s History Month Celebration
Featuring a presentation of Dakota Daughters
“Three Women, Three Lives, Three Stories”
Dakota Daughters will commemorate the 135th anniversary of the December 29, 1890, Wounded Knee Massacre in 2025. They have made it a priority to tell this story throughout South Dakota by relaying historical information in an interesting, thought-provoking, entertaining and memorable way. The Dakota Daughters hope when people see their play, they will realize that although we all are unique – such as skin color, cultures, beliefs – deep down we are not all that different. Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ – “We are all related.
Through the voices of SDHC scholars Joyce Jefferson, Geraldine Goes In Center, and Lillian Witt, audiences experience a contemplative, Chautauqua-style retelling of history by three women from diverse cultures (one white, one black, one Lakota) in the late 1800s. Although the character portrayals are fictionalized, the historical representation is based on the actual events, materials, and arts of that period
