Join Park Ranger Eric Graves at the wagons on the Oregon Trail Pathway for a talk about overland trail cutoffs. Some of these cutoffs saved time or brought the traveler to superior grazing or water. Others proved to be a disaster by delaying emigrants with rough terrain or leading them away from water and grazing. In the event of inclement weather, this program will be moved to inside the visitor center theater.

Join Humanities Nebraska Speaker's Bureau speaker Bill Ganzel for Dust Bowl Descent. Ganzel located and interviewed a number of individuals who survived the Depression by using photographs taken by the Farm Security Administration. This program follows his journey in locating these people, recounts their stories and juxtaposes recent photographs with 60-year-old images to provide a compelling account of the triumph of the human spirit over hard times. This program has been made possible with the generous support of Humanities Nebraksa and Black Hills Parks and Forests Association.

Celebrate National Forest Week in the beautiful Bearlodge Mountains of Black Hills National Forest!
In this workshop, participants will learn how to develop a naturalist mindset. We will practice our observation skills and curiosity to learn more about the world around us! Using our senses we will learn how to navigate using cues from nature, and we will study tracks and signs animals leave behind to learn how to answer these questions: What animal has left this track? Why was this animal here: was it hunting, frightened, or at ease? Is it male or female? Is it pregnant, or injured? Does it have a large set of antlers or horns? And more.
This program will meet at the Cook Lake Picnic Area. Please note this is a day-use fee site. If you do not have a seasonal day use pass, the fee is $5 ($2.50 with Senior/Access Pass). Day use passes are available at the day-use recreation areas from FRM staff and/or at the self-service pay stations.
Cost: Suggested donation $15-30
Who can attend: Anyone with an interest in expanding their awareness and knowledge about Black Hills wildlife! This workshop is great for families with children 5+, hunters and hikers!
What to Expect:
- Be prepared to be outside. We will be hiking around Cook Lake potentially up to 2 miles with uneven, rocky surfaces
- Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction. Trekking poles might be nice to have.
- Be prepared with layers, sunscreen, and water!
- Pack snacks and water

Folk singer and educator Martin Gilmore will present a one-hour concert and history of music from mining camps in the American West. A well known regional musical voice, Martin Gilmore is an instructor of folk and bluegrass music at the University of Northern Colorado and Swallow Hill Music Association in Denver, Colorado. He is also a lecturer with the University of Denver Enrichment Program. He has released four solo albums and toured both nationally and internationally. This program will take place in the amphitheater behind the Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center and has been made possible through the generous support of Black Hills Parks and Forests Association, the official non-profit partner of Scotts Bluff National Monument.

The Forest Service is teaming up with the National Park Service to host a Moon Walk on a family-friendly trail and explore another vastness feature at one of the longest caves in the world.

Join park ranger Matt Salomon for a trip into the backcountry of Scotts Bluff National Monument. Visitors will need either a pickup or high clearance SUV to travel the canal road through the north side of the monument property. The backcountry tour is limited to 50 people and pre-registration is required. To register, please call the visitor center at 308-436-9700 and provide how many people will be in your group. Registration opens on Monday, July 8th. In the event of poor road conditions, an alternate program will be offered
