Are you ready to explore the backcountry with confidence? Join SheJumps and the Black Hills Parks and Forests Association (BHPFA) for a two-part Map and Compass Navigation Course designed specifically for women and girls. Whether you’re new to outdoor adventures or looking to sharpen your skills, this course will empower you with the knowledge to navigate the wild with ease!
Why Learn Map and Compass Skills?
In a world where we rely heavily on GPS and technology, learning the traditional skills of reading a map and using a compass can be incredibly empowering. These skills not only enhance your connection to the natural world but also give you the confidence to explore off the beaten path, knowing you can find your way safely. This course is about more than just navigation; it’s about building independence, boosting self-reliance, and finding a deeper sense of adventure.
What You’ll Learn
During this two-part course, you’ll dive into the essentials of navigation with expert guidance, hands-on practice, and real-world application. You’ll learn:
- How to read a topographic map: Understand the symbols, contours, and features that reveal the lay of the land.
- Proper use of an orienteering compass: Learn the art of using a compass to take bearings, navigate terrain, and stay on course.
- Combining map and compass skills: Master the techniques of using both tools together to confidently plan and execute a route.
- Fundamentals of navigation: Gain an understanding of magnetic north, true north, magnetic variation (declination), and how to take a bearing from the terrain and maps.
