What is the Wind Cave Classic Patch?
This 3-inch round embroidered patch is the official Wind Cave National Park patch, made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced custom souvenirs for national and state parks for over 25 years. The design captures both worlds of Wind Cave: the mixed-grass prairie above, home to bison, elk, and prairie dog colonies, and the cave below, lined with the park’s signature boxwork formations. The park holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork, and the patch art reflects what makes Wind Cave different from every other national park on the list.
It’s sold through the Wind Cave visitor center store and BHPFA’s online shop. Every purchase goes back into public lands programs across Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Scotts Bluff, and the Black Hills National Forest.
About Wind Cave National Park
Wind Cave National Park sits in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs. It was established on January 9, 1903, signed by Theodore Roosevelt, making it the seventh national park in the United States and the first established specifically to protect a cave.
The cave itself has about 161 miles of surveyed passages, making it the fourth-longest cave in the United States and seventh-longest in the world. The defining feature is boxwork: honeycomb-patterned calcite fins that formed when calcite filled cracks in the limestone and the surrounding rock slowly eroded away. Wind Cave holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork. You won’t find anything else like it.
Above ground, the park protects a mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest with a free-roaming bison herd descended from 14 animals transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the earliest bison restoration herds in North America.

How to attach the patch
The patch has an iron-on adhesive backing. Place it face-up on the fabric, cover with a thin pressing cloth, and press with a hot iron (no steam) for 20 to 30 seconds. For anything that sees regular washing or outdoor use, a few hand stitches around the edge will hold it permanently. Avoid hot-cycle machine washing and do not bleach.

Can I iron this onto any fabric?

Does the patch stay on after washing?
Iron-on adhesive holds well on woven fabrics but can lift at the edges after repeated machine washing. For long-term durability, sew around the perimeter after ironing. Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water and air dry.
How big is 3 inches? Will it fit on a hat?
Three inches in diameter is roughly the size of a large coin or a standard patch on a park ranger hat. It fits on the front panel of a baseball cap, on a jacket sleeve, or on the main panel of a daypack.
