Description

What is this pin?

A round enameled metal pin for Wind Cave National Park, made by LW Bristol. The design shows two bison standing on green prairie hills in the upper half and a caver walking through a cave passage in the lower half. “Wind Cave National Park” runs along the top edge and “Hot Springs, SD” along the bottom, with small stars on each side. Gold-tone raised lettering and details give it some texture against the enamel. The reverse has a brushed metal finish.

Wind Cave National Park approved the design.

About Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park sits just north of Hot Springs in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. Established in 1903, it was the seventh national park in the country and the first created to protect a cave.

The cave has over 160 miles of mapped passages and holds roughly 95% of the world’s known boxwork, a calcite formation that looks like a honeycomb pressed into the cave walls and ceilings. Above ground, the park protects one of the last intact mixed-grass prairies in North America, with a herd of around 400 bison along with elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs.

The pin’s design captures both halves of the park: bison grazing on the prairie up top, a caver exploring the passages below.

Who is this for?

Visitors. If you toured Wind Cave or drove through the prairie and watched the bison, this pin marks the trip. Wear it on a hat, jacket, lanyard, or backpack.

Pin collectors. BHPFA carries over 30 pins for parks and forests across the Black Hills, Nebraska, and western South Dakota. The Classic series pins use a consistent round format that displays well together. If you’re collecting park by park, check the Jewel Cave Classic Pin too.

Gift buyers. On a presentation card, it works as a small gift or add-on to a larger order. No wrapping needed.

Frequently asked questions

What does the pin design show?
The top half shows two bison on green prairie hills with blue sky. The bottom half shows a figure walking through a cave passage with a light. It captures both sides of Wind Cave National Park: the mixed-grass prairie above and the cave system below. “Wind Cave National Park” and “Hot Springs, SD” run around the border.

How big is this pin?
7/8 inch in diameter, just under an inch. Standard lapel pin size.

Is there a matching hiking medallion?
Yes. The Wind Cave Classic Hiking Medallion uses the same artwork at 1 3/4″ diameter. It’s designed for hiking sticks, bikes, or display. Also $4.99.

What’s a “classic” pin?
LW Bristol’s Classic series uses a consistent round format with park-specific artwork. The same design appears on both the pin and the hiking medallion for each park.

How do I attach the pin?
It has a tack pin back. Push the pin through fabric, then slide the clutch onto the post to hold it in place. Works on hats, jacket lapels, lanyards, backpack straps, and vests.
