Description

What it is

This is the Wind Cave National Park sticker from the Scenic Highways series, a line of stickers and posters sold in park stores across the Black Hills region. The sticker is rectangular, 2.5 by 4.5 inches, printed on vinyl with an adhesive backing made for smooth surfaces. At 0.1 oz, about the weight of a postage stamp, it mails easily in a card or fits in a jacket pocket as a quick takeaway from a park visit.

About the design

The artwork is a bordered poster-style panel in green and gold. It frames Beaver Creek Bridge on Highway 87, the arched span that crosses the canyon in the park, with a vintage touring car parked below and forested hills behind. A printed border runs around the edge of the sticker, with the “Wind Cave National Park” banner up top and “Beaver Creek Bridge on Hwy 87” along the bottom.

About the park

Wind Cave sits in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs on US-385. It became the seventh national park in the United States on January 9, 1903, signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, and was the first national park established to protect a cave. The cave below holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork, the thin calcite fins that form honeycomb chambers across its walls and ceilings. Above ground, mixed-grass prairie covers most of the surface, shared with a free-roaming bison herd descended from 14 animals brought from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the earliest bison restoration efforts in North America.

Who picks this up

It is an easy grab for visitors leaving a cave tour at Wind Cave, and it fits cleanly on a water bottle, a cooler lid, or a travel journal cover. Sticker collectors working through NPS sites find Black Hills coverage thinner than the major western parks, so this one fills a real gap for anyone building a South Dakota collection.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the sticker?
2.5 inches by 4.5 inches, rectangular format.

What surfaces does it stick to?
The adhesive works on most smooth surfaces: glass, painted metal, plastic, and powder-coated finishes. Cars, water bottles, laptops, and gear boxes all work well. Textured surfaces like rough wood or fabric hold less reliably.

Is it related to the Scenic Highways posters?
Yes. The Scenic Highways Park Posters are part of the same product line, with screen-printed designs of Wind Cave and Jewel Cave landmarks. The posters and stickers are sold separately.

Does buying this support the park?
BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.
