Description

What is this pin?

This enamel lapel pin commemorates the Wild Cave Tour at Wind Cave National Park. The design puts a helmeted caver with an illuminated headlamp against a backdrop of Wind Cave’s boxwork formations: the honeycomb-pattern calcite fins that cover roughly 95% of the world’s known examples. The park holds the largest concentration of boxwork on Earth, and this tour gets you into the parts of the cave where that geology is visible in its rawest form.

Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a Tennessee-based manufacturer that produces custom souvenirs for national and state parks across the country. The pin is sold through BHPFA’s store at Wind Cave and online.

About the Wild Cave Tour

Wind Cave’s standard cave tours follow paved paths with electric lighting. The Wild Cave Tour is different. Participants wear coveralls and helmets provided by the park, crawl through narrow passages, and navigate sections of the cave that no maintained trail reaches. It’s the same kind of off-trail caving that explorers have been doing at Wind Cave since Tom and Jesse Bingham first heard wind whistling from a small hole in the ground in 1881.

Wind Cave now has about 161 miles of mapped passages, making it the 7th longest cave in the world and the 4th longest in the United States. Established in 1903, it was the first national park created specifically to protect a cave and the 7th national park in the country. Boxwork is the cave’s defining geological feature: calcite fins that project from the ceiling and walls in a grid pattern, more abundant here than anywhere else on the planet.

Frequently asked questions

What does the pin design show?
A helmeted caver with an illuminated headlamp, set against Wind Cave’s boxwork formations. Boxwork is the cave’s signature geology: calcite fins in a honeycomb grid covering the cave walls and ceiling. Wind Cave contains roughly 95% of the world’s known boxwork.

What is the Wild Cave Tour?
Wind Cave’s off-trail caving tour. Participants wear coveralls and helmets provided by the park and navigate passages not accessible on standard tours. It covers sections of the cave off the maintained path, including crawling through narrow areas. The park’s ranger-led guided tours are the only way to access the cave; all visitors must go with a guide.

How is this different from the other Wind Cave pins?
The Wind Cave Classic Pin shows bison and a cave explorer in a round format with text around the border. The Wind Cave Bison Pin focuses on the park’s bison herd. This Wild Cave Tour pin puts the caving experience front and center, specifically the boxwork geology that makes Wind Cave unusual.

What size is the pin?
Dimensions are not confirmed on file. Jason to verify with HQ or measure the physical item before pushing this live. L.W. Bristol pins in this style typically run 3/4″ to 1″ on the longest dimension.

How do I attach the pin?
Tack pin back with a clutch fastener. Push the post through the fabric and slide the clutch onto the post. Works on hat brims, jacket lapels, lanyards, backpack straps, and canvas vests.

What other Wind Cave items does BHPFA carry?
Pins, hiking medallions, a patch, apparel, mugs, and ornaments. See the full Wind Cave store for the complete selection.

Does buying this support national parks?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.
