Description
What is this pin?
A die-cut enameled metal pin shaped around a bison profile, made by L.W. Bristol Classics for Wind Cave National Park. At 3/4″ x 1″, it is sized for a hat brim or jacket lapel. The colored enamel fill and gold-tone raised details give it the same look as the other L.W. Bristol Classics pins in the Wind Cave line. Butterfly-clutch backing on the reverse.
L.W. Bristol Classics is a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has made custom souvenirs for national parks, trails, and historic sites for decades. This pin is part of the Wind Cave collectibles family alongside the Wind Cave Classic Pin and the Wind Cave Classic Hiking Medallion.
The Wind Cave bison herd
Wind Cave National Park is one of the older bison restoration sites in North America. In 1913, 14 bison were transferred to the park from the Bronx Zoo, forming one of the first managed restoration herds in the country. The herd now numbers around 350 to 400 animals and grazes the mixed-grass prairie above the cave.
Wind Cave’s above-ground ecosystem is as much a part of the park as the cave itself. Bison, elk, pronghorn, prairie dog colonies, and a black-footed ferret reintroduction site all occupy the same prairie the pin depicts. The cave entrance sits right in the middle of it.

Who is this for?
If you toured the Wind Cave prairies and drove through the bison herd, this pin is a practical way to mark the trip. Wear it on a hat brim, jacket lapel, backpack strap, or lanyard.
For collectors working through the Wind Cave line, this pairs with the Wind Cave Classic Pin, which uses a round format showing bison above and a cave explorer below. The two together cover both the prairie and the cave.
It works as a standalone purchase or as a small addition to a larger Wind Cave or Black Hills order.
Frequently asked questions
What does the pin design show?
A bison in profile, die-cut to follow the animal’s shape. Colored enamel fill with gold-tone raised details and border. The exact color scheme and any text around the design are best confirmed from the product image.
How big is it?
3/4″ wide by 1″ tall (die-cut bison shape). Compact enough for a hat brim or jacket collar.
What kind of backing does it have?
A butterfly clutch (also called a military clutch). Push the pin post through the fabric, then press the clutch onto the post. Holds on hats, jackets, lanyards, and most canvas and woven surfaces.
What’s the difference between this pin and the Wind Cave Classic Pin (SKU 1015)?
The Classic Pin is round (7/8″ diameter) and shows bison on the prairie in the top half with a cave explorer in the lower half. This Bison Pin is die-cut to a bison profile shape (3/4″ x 1″) and focuses on the herd. Different formats, different designs, same park.
Is there a matching hiking medallion for this design?
There is no confirmed bison-specific hiking medallion. The closest match is the Wind Cave Classic Hiking Medallion (SKU 1013), which is 1 3/4″ round with the bison-plus-cave-explorer design and includes mounting nails for hiking sticks.
How many bison live at Wind Cave?
Around 350 to 400 animals. The herd traces back to 14 bison transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, making it one of the earliest bison restoration efforts in North America. It is not one of the largest herds (Yellowstone is around 5,000 and Custer State Park is around 1,300), but it is one of the oldest continually managed free-roaming herds on NPS land.
