Description

What is the Fort Pierre National Grasslands pin?

This enameled metal pin from L.W. Bristol Classics is the official collectible for Fort Pierre National Grassland in central South Dakota. The design features a greater prairie-chicken, the ground-nesting bird of the central plains that has become closely associated with the mixed-grass prairie ecosystem Fort Pierre protects.

The pin measures 1″ die cut, comes on a display card, and has the same construction as the rest of the L.W. Bristol Classics grasslands series: full-color enamel on the front, brushed metal on the back, butterfly clutch fastener.

About Fort Pierre National Grassland

Fort Pierre National Grassland covers 115,890 acres in Lyman, Stanley, and Jones counties, southwest of Pierre and Fort Pierre. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands system, with administrative offices in Chadron, Nebraska. The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is BHPFA’s partner for grasslands programming.

The land is mixed-grass prairie. Some visitors recognize it as the filming location for the 1990 film “Dances with Wolves,” though the open country here looks much as it did before production arrived. Pronghorn, mule deer, and prairie dogs are common, and the grassland is part of the broader range where greater prairie-chicken populations have historically been documented.

About the greater prairie-chicken

The greater prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus cupido) is a medium-large grouse that depends on large, undisturbed tracts of mixed and tallgrass prairie. Males are known for a booming mating display: they inflate orange air sacs on their necks, raise head feathers called pinnae, and stamp in tight circles on established display grounds called leks. The displays happen at dawn in spring.

The species is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, with populations estimated around 360,000 as of 2020, down from millions historically. Habitat loss and agricultural conversion are the primary drivers. Fort Pierre National Grassland, like other managed grasslands across the central plains, is part of the landscape where the species can still find the open prairie it needs.

Who is this for?

If you have driven the mixed-grass country between Pierre and the Badlands, this is the pin for that stretch. At 1″ die cut, it reads clearly on a hat brim, jacket lapel, or the strap of a daypack. Small enough to carry alongside a dozen others; specific enough to mark a place most people have not heard of.

Collectors building a full BHPFA grasslands set will want this alongside the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands Pin, the Bessey Ranger District pin, and the National Grasslands Visitor Center pin. The greater prairie-chicken design is distinct from everything else in the line.

It also works as a small gift for anyone interested in Great Plains conservation or the prairie-chicken specifically.
