Description

What is the National Grasslands Visitor Center Patch?

This is an embroidered patch representing the National Grasslands Visitor Center, the public face of Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands (NNFG). It’s made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee, that has produced custom souvenirs for national parks, national forests, and monuments for decades. The patch measures 3 inches by 2 3/4 inches and weighs 0.1 oz, so it sits flat on fabric without adding bulk.

BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, a USDA Forest Service unit covering millions of acres of Great Plains grassland in Nebraska and South Dakota. The National Grasslands Visitor Center in Wall, South Dakota is the primary public entry point for learning about these lands. Compared to the NPS parks in the Black Hills, the national grasslands don’t get as many souvenir options. This patch is one of the few collectibles specifically made for NGVC.

About Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands

Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is a USDA Forest Service unit that covers the Nebraska National Forest, the Oglala National Grassland, the Buffalo Gap National Grassland, and the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest. The combined unit encompasses a large section of the Great Plains across Nebraska and South Dakota.

The National Grasslands Visitor Center in Wall, SD, near the Badlands and the Buffalo Gap National Grassland, provides interpretation about grassland ecology, ranching history, and the public land management history of the region. It is the information hub for visitors exploring these remote grassland areas.

Unlike the four NPS sites in BHPFA’s partner network, Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is a USFS unit. It does not have a Passport to Your National Parks cancellation stamp (that program is NPS-only), but it’s every bit as much a part of the Black Hills public lands network that BHPFA supports.

Specifications

  • Size: 3″ x 2 3/4″ (confirm shape against physical product)
  • Weight: 0.1 oz
  • Construction: Embroidered fabric
  • Manufacturer: L.W. Bristol Classics, Bristol, TN
  • Application: Iron-on backing (confirm; can also be hand-sewn)

Who is this for?

Patch collectors who track their public lands visits will want this one specifically because the grasslands are under-represented in the souvenir market. If you’re working through the Black Hills region and collecting one patch per site, this rounds out the Nebraska side of the BHPFA network.

It’s also a good pick for anyone with a connection to the Great Plains. The grasslands don’t get the same foot traffic as Badlands or the Black Hills parks, which is part of the appeal for people who know the region well.

At a compact 3″ x 2 3/4″ and 0.1 oz, it fits on the front panel of a baseball cap, on a daypack strap, or on a denim jacket without pulling the fabric.

How to attach the patch

If the patch has an iron-on backing: place it face-up on the fabric, cover with a thin pressing cloth, and press with a hot iron (no steam) for 20 to 30 seconds. For outdoor gear or anything that gets regular washing, add a few hand stitches around the perimeter after ironing. Machine wash gentle in cold water and air dry.

If sew-on only: a whip stitch or blanket stitch around the border in a matching thread color holds it permanently. Takes about 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the National Grasslands Visitor Center?
The National Grasslands Visitor Center is located in Wall, South Dakota, and is the information center for Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands. It provides interpretation about the Great Plains grassland ecosystem, ranching history, and the public lands managed by the USDA Forest Service in the region.

Is Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands an NPS site?
No. Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is a USDA Forest Service (USFS) unit, not a National Park Service site. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner for this unit along with Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, and the Black Hills National Forest.

Can I get a Passport stamp at the National Grasslands Visitor Center?
No. The Passport to Your National Parks cancellation stamp program is run by the National Park Service and covers NPS sites only. USFS sites, including Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, do not participate in the Passport program.

Is this an iron-on or sew-on patch?
Based on comparable patches in this product line by L.W. Bristol Classics, it likely has an iron-on adhesive backing with the option to also sew it on. Confirm this detail on the product packaging before applying.

Does buying this support the national grasslands?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.

What other patches does BHPFA carry for this region?
