Description

What is the Jewel Cave Classic Patch?

This 3-inch round embroidered patch is the official Jewel Cave National Monument patch, made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced custom souvenirs for national and state parks for over 25 years. The design shows both the surface scenery of the Black Hills and the underground world of Jewel Cave, with the cave’s signature dogtooth spar and nailhead spar calcite crystals that give the monument its name.

It’s sold at the Jewel Cave visitor center store and through BHPFA’s online shop. Proceeds go back into public lands programs across Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Scotts Bluff, and the Black Hills National Forest.

About Jewel Cave

Jewel Cave National Monument sits beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota and is the third-longest cave system in the world, with more than 220 miles of surveyed passages as of 2026. The cave gets its name from the calcite crystals that line the walls: dogtooth spar (sharp, pointed crystals) and nailhead spar (flatter, blunt crystals) that catch the light like gemstones.

Beyond the crystals, the cave also contains boxwork (a rare honeycomb pattern of calcite fins), cave popcorn, flowstone, and a long calcite ribbon known as cave bacon. The monument is operated by the National Park Service, and guided tours depart from the visitor center on US-16 between Custer and Hot Springs.

Who is this for?

Patch collectors who work through the national parks often pick up a patch from each site. If you’ve toured the Scenic Tour, the Historic Lantern Tour, or made it through the Wild Caving Tour, this is the patch that marks it.

It also works for anyone putting together a hiking pack, denim jacket, or ranger hat covered in park badges. At 3 inches and 0.2 oz, it sits well on fabric without pulling or distorting the material underneath.

It’s a practical souvenir or small gift that travels well.

How to attach the patch

The patch has an iron-on adhesive backing. Place it face-up on the fabric, cover with a thin cloth, and press with a hot iron (no steam) for 20-30 seconds. For items that see heavy washing or outdoor use, a few hand stitches around the edge will hold it permanently. Avoid machine washing on hot cycles and do not bleach.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an officially licensed Jewel Cave patch?
Yes. The patch is officially approved by Jewel Cave National Monument and is sold exclusively through BHPFA, the official nonprofit partner of the monument.

Can I iron this onto any fabric?
The iron-on backing works on most woven fabrics: denim, cotton, canvas, nylon. It won’t adhere properly to synthetic athletic fabrics or leather. If you’re attaching to a stretchy material, sewing is a better option than ironing.

Does the patch stay on after washing?
Iron-on patches hold well on woven fabrics but can lift at the edges over time with repeated machine washing. For long-term durability, sew around the perimeter after ironing. Hand wash in cold water or machine wash on a gentle cycle; air dry.

How big is 3 inches? Will it fit on a hat?
Three inches in diameter is about the size of a large coin or a standard patch found on park ranger hats. It fits on the front panel of a baseball cap, on a jacket sleeve, or on the main panel of a daypack.

What other patches does BHPFA carry?
BHPFA stocks patches for Wind Cave National Park, Scotts Bluff National Monument, Custer State Park, the Buffalo Roundup, and other Black Hills and Nebraska public lands sites. Check the full patch collection.

Does buying this support Jewel Cave?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Jewel Cave National Monument. Every purchase supports education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at Jewel Cave and across BHPFA’s other partner sites: Wind Cave National Park, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.

Can I get my Passport stamped at Jewel Cave?
Yes. Jewel Cave National Monument is an NPS site with a cancellation stamp available at the visitor center. BHPFA also sells the Passport to Your National Parks Classic Edition if you haven’t started collecting yet.
