Description
What is this patch?
An embroidered patch from Custer State Park’s Buffalo Roundup in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The design shows a bison at full gallop with a cowboy rider visible in the background, referencing the fall roundup when riders push the park’s herd across the prairie each year. Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a manufacturer based in Bristol, Tennessee, that has supplied patches and medallions to national park stores for decades.
The patch measures 2 3/4″ wide by 3 1/4″ tall and has a merrowed (overlock-stitched) border for clean, finished edges. It applies iron-on or can be sewn onto most fabrics.
About the Buffalo Roundup
Custer State Park manages a herd of roughly 1,300 bison across 71,000 acres in the southern Black Hills. Every fall, usually late September, riders on horseback drive the entire herd to corrals for annual health checks and population management. The event draws thousands of spectators and is one of the most-attended annual events in South Dakota.
The roundup dates to 1914, when the park purchased its founding bison from Scotty Philip’s herd near Pierre. The park sits adjacent to Wind Cave National Park, one of BHPFA’s partner sites, and shares much of its wildlife corridor with the national park’s free-roaming herds to the south.

Who is this for?
If you’ve been to the Buffalo Roundup, either as a spectator from the viewing areas or as a volunteer rider, this patch is a way to mark that trip. The design is specific to the roundup event, not just a generic park patch.
Patch collectors building a Black Hills set will want this one alongside the general Custer State Park patch, the Wind Cave patch, and the Jewel Cave patch. BHPFA carries patches for most of the public lands in the region.
And 0.2 oz, it also fits easily in a card or envelope for a small gift without adding shipping weight.
Application instructions
Iron-on method: place the patch on clean, dry fabric, cover it with a thin pressing cloth, and press firmly with a hot iron for 30 to 45 seconds. Let it cool fully before touching the patch or moving the item. For backpacks, technical fabrics, or anything that will see hard use, sewing around the edges gives a more permanent hold.
Frequently asked questions
What does the patch look like?
The design shows an American bison running, with a cowboy rider in the background. It references the Buffalo Roundup event held at Custer State Park each fall. The patch has a merrowed (overlock-stitched) border and measures 2 3/4″ wide by 3 1/4″ tall.
Is Custer State Park a national park?
No. Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park managed by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. It borders Wind Cave National Park to the south and shares much of its wildlife corridor with the national park. BHPFA sells Custer State Park merchandise because of the park’s proximity to and shared visitor base with Wind Cave and Jewel Cave.
Can I iron this patch onto a backpack or nylon jacket?
Iron-on adhesive works best on natural fabrics like cotton, denim, and canvas. For nylon, synthetic, or technical fabrics, sewing is more reliable. Test with low heat in an inconspicuous area if you’re unsure about the fabric.
