About Custer State Park
Custer State Park covers 71,000 acres in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It’s one of the largest state parks in the country. The park is managed by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks and sits adjacent to Wind Cave National Park.
The park is best known for its free-roaming bison herd of roughly 1,300 animals. Every fall (usually late September), the park hosts the Buffalo Roundup, when riders on horseback drive the entire herd across the prairie for annual health checks and population management. It draws thousands of spectators.
Other highlights include Wildlife Loop Road (where burros walk up to your car), Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road with its pigtail bridges and tunnel views of Mount Rushmore, Sylvan Lake, and the Cathedral Spires.
Who is this for?
Visitors marking their trip. If you drove Wildlife Loop Road, hiked to the Cathedral Spires, or watched the bison at sunset, this patch goes on your jacket or pack as a record of it.
Patch collectors. If you’re collecting patches from parks across the Black Hills region, Custer State Park is one you’ll want. BHPFA also carries patches for Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Scotts Bluff, and more.
Gift buyers. Patches are an easy add-on to a larger gift or a small standalone souvenir. The interpretive card makes it presentable without wrapping.
Frequently asked questions
Can I iron this patch on?
Yes. Place the patch where you want it, cover with a thin cloth, and press with a hot iron for 30 to 45 seconds. Let it cool before moving. For heavy-use items like backpacks, sewing provides a more permanent hold.
What’s the interpretive card?
The patch comes mounted on a card with information about Custer State Park. It makes the patch a better gift and gives context about the park for people who haven’t visited yet.
Is Custer State Park a national park?
No. Custer State Park is a South Dakota state park, managed by South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks. It borders Wind Cave National Park on its southern edge. Both are in the Black Hills.
