What is this pin?
An officially licensed Smokey Bear collectible pin with a photo dome front and brushed metal reverse. The dome is a clear epoxy cap over a full-color printed image of Smokey’s head, giving the artwork a slight magnifying effect and a glossy finish. A rubber stud clutch on the back grips fabric firmly without punching a permanent hole in it, which makes the pin practical for hats, jackets, vests, and uniforms.
Smokey Bear has been the face of wildfire prevention since August 9, 1944, when the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council launched the campaign. The slogan started as “Smokey Says, Care Will Prevent 9 out of 10 Forest Fires,” shortened to “Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires” in 1947, and updated in 2001 to “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” to include grasslands and brush fires.

What does “photo dome” mean?
A photo dome pin has a clear epoxy cap over a printed color image. The dome makes the artwork look glossy and slightly magnified, and it protects the print from scratches. The reverse is brushed metal. It is different from a flat enamel pin, which uses raised metal borders and colored enamel fills.
How does the rubber clutch work?
Push the metal post on the back of the pin through your fabric, then press the rubber cap onto the post until it holds firm. The rubber grips tight enough that the pin will not fall off during normal wear, and it does not chew up the fabric the way a sharp metal clutch can. To remove, pull the cap straight off.
Is this officially licensed?
Yes. Smokey Bear is a registered trademark jointly owned by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council. The image and name are used under license. Unlicensed Smokey Bear products exist, but this is not one of them.
When did the Smokey Bear campaign start?
August 9, 1944. The Forest Service had been running fire prevention posters earlier in World War II (including a 1942 poster featuring Bambi), but Smokey Bear debuted in 1944 as the permanent campaign mascot. A real black bear cub rescued from a 1950 New Mexico wildfire later became the living “Smokey” housed at the National Zoo until his death in 1976.
What is the current slogan?
“Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.” It was updated from “Forest Fires” to “Wildfires” in 2001 to reflect that grass, brush, and shrub fires are also part of the prevention message, not just forest fires.
Does the Black Hills National Forest have Smokey Bear programs?
Yes. The US Forest Service runs Smokey Bear education programs at USFS ranger districts and visitor centers across the country, including the Black Hills National Forest. Check directly with the Black Hills National Forest for current events and appearances.
