What is this coin?
This is a double-sided collector coin from Impact Photographics, made for the BHPFA park stores. One face features Wind Cave National Park; the other features Jewel Cave National Monument. Both parks are in South Dakota’s Black Hills and are two of the most significant cave systems in the world. The coin is 1 13/16 inches across and weighs 1.2 oz, with a silver-tone finish.

About the two caves
Wind Cave National Park has about 161 miles of surveyed passage, making it the seventh-longest cave in the world and the fourth-longest in the US. What sets it apart geologically is boxwork, a honeycomb-patterned calcite formation. Wind Cave has an estimated 95 percent of the world’s known boxwork. The park was established January 9, 1903, when Theodore Roosevelt signed it into law. It was the seventh national park in the United States and the first established specifically to protect a cave.
Jewel Cave National Monument has more than 220 miles of surveyed passage as of 2026, making it the third-longest cave in the world. The cave is named for the calcite crystals lining its walls: dogtooth spar (sharp and pointed) and nailhead spar (flat and blunt). Systematic exploration of Jewel Cave really took off in the 1960s and 70s when Jan and Herb Conn, a husband-and-wife climbing team, added roughly 64 miles of mapped passage. A single six-person survey team crossed the 200-mile mark in one night on December 15, 2018.
