What is this bison plush?
Bison are what people remember from Wind Cave National Park. The free-roaming herd moves across the mixed-grass prairie above the cave, and an early morning or evening drive usually turns one up, sometimes standing in the road with no particular plan to move. This is the small plush version of that animal, about 8 inches nose to tail.
It is the Cuddlekins Mini bison from Wild Republic, the plush brand of K and M International out of Twinsburg, Ohio. What makes it worth picking up over a generic brown stuffed animal is that the sculpt follows a real bison instead of rounding it off into a bear shape.
What it looks like
The head, hump, and forelegs are covered in long shaggy dark brown pile, and it stops in a clean line at the ribs where the coat turns short, smooth, and tan. Real bison shed into roughly that two-tone pattern once the winter coat comes off in early summer, so the plush looks like an animal you would actually see on a July drive. There is a beard under the chin, a black nose, brown eyes, and small gray horns curving up past a pair of brown tufted ears. All four hooves are gray, and the tail ends in a shaggy tuft.

How to care for it
Surface wash only. Wipe it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, test a hidden spot first, then let it air dry and brush the pile back up once it is dry. Do not run it through a machine or soak it. The plastic pellets in the body are the reason: they hold water and take a long time to give it back.

Bison. Both words get used for this animal in the Black Hills and nobody will correct you at the register, but true buffalo are the water buffalo of Asia and the Cape buffalo of Africa. The animal at Wind Cave is the American bison, and Wild Republic sells it under both names depending on the store.
Does it stand up on its own?
Yes. It stands on four legs, and the plastic pellets in the body keep it steady on a shelf rather than tipping onto its side.
What is it made of?
Polyester fibers with plastic pellets for weight, all new materials. The pellets are what give it the settled feel when you pick it up.

Are there really bison at Wind Cave?
Yes, a free-roaming herd of roughly 350 to 400 head. It began in 1913 with 14 animals transferred from the Bronx Zoo, which makes it one of the earliest bison restoration herds in North America. It is not one of the largest, and it was never meant to be. It is one of the oldest, and the park has kept it going for more than a century.
Does buying this support the parks?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
