Adopt-a-bison and help support the conservation of Wind Cave National Park’s bison herd!
Bison were reintroduced to Wind Cave National Park in 1913 from the Bronx Zoo in New York. Because of efforts in the early 20th century to protect bison on the Great Plains, Wind Cave National Park now has one of the most genetically diverse and pure (free from cattle genes) herds in North America.
We launched our adoption program in 2017 to support Wind Cave National Parks, and since then have raised close to $70,000. In 2019 the program purchased 10 GPS tracking collars so that park biologists could better understand bison movements in the park. That data has been made into an interactive story map–you can view that information here!
