What is the Black Hills National Forest Patch?
This 3-inch round embroidered patch is the official Black Hills National Forest souvenir patch, made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned patch and medallion manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced custom souvenirs for national and state parks for decades. The design features the forest’s ponderosa pine ridgeline with “Black Hills National Forest” lettering around the border.
It’s sold at BHPFA visitor centers across the Black Hills and through BHPFA’s online shop. Proceeds go back into education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at the Black Hills National Forest and BHPFA’s other partner parks and forests.
About the Black Hills National Forest
The Black Hills National Forest covers about 1.25 million acres across western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. It is managed by the US Forest Service (USDA), not the National Park Service. Inside the forest boundary are Black Elk Peak (at 7,242 feet, the highest point east of the Rockies, renamed in 2016 from Harney Peak), Pactola Reservoir, Spearfish Canyon, and the Sylvan Lake area.
Because the forest is USFS, not NPS, it does not participate in the Passport to Your National Parks stamp program. BHPFA carries separate hiking medallions and other collectibles for forest visitors who want a take-home marker of a trip.

How to attach the patch
The patch has an iron-on adhesive backing. Place it face up on the fabric, cover with a thin cloth, and press with a hot iron (no steam) for about 20 to 30 seconds. For items that see heavy washing or rough outdoor use, a few hand stitches around the edge will hold the patch permanently. Avoid machine washing on hot cycles and do not bleach.

Can I iron this onto any fabric?
The iron-on backing works on most woven fabrics: denim, cotton, canvas, and nylon. It will not adhere properly to synthetic athletic fabrics or leather. On stretchy materials, sewing around the edge is a better option than ironing.
Does the patch stay on after washing?
Iron-on patches hold well on woven fabrics but can lift at the edges over time with repeated machine washing. For long-term durability, sew around the perimeter after ironing. Hand wash in cold water or machine wash on a gentle cycle, then air dry.
How big is 3 inches? Will it fit on a hat?
Three inches in diameter is about the size of a large coin. It fits on the front panel of a baseball cap, a jacket sleeve, or the main panel of a daypack.
Can I get my Passport to Your National Parks book stamped in the Black Hills National Forest?
No. The Passport to Your National Parks program is run by the National Park Service, and only NPS sites carry cancellation stamps. The Black Hills National Forest is a US Forest Service site and does not participate. The nearest BHPFA partner sites with Passport stamps are Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
