What is this pin?
A die-cut enameled metal lapel pin for the Black Hills National Forest. The design shows the granite spires that rise out of the forest’s ponderosa pine country, with “Black Hills National Forest” lettering and colored enamel fill. The front is enamel over raised metal detail; the reverse is brushed finish with a butterfly-clutch post.
Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced custom pins, patches, and hiking medallions for parks, trails, and historic sites across the country for decades. This is the official pin design approved by the Black Hills National Forest for sale in BHPFA park stores.
About the Black Hills National Forest
The Black Hills National Forest covers about 1.25 million acres across western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. It is managed by the US Forest Service, not the National Park Service. The forest includes Black Elk Peak (7,242 ft, the highest point in South Dakota and the Black Hills), Pactola Reservoir, Spearfish Canyon, the Sylvan Lake area, and the Black Elk Wilderness.
The granite spires shown on this pin are a signature feature of the forest’s central range, visible from the Needles Highway (SD-87) and the Cathedral Spires area along the Black Elk Peak trail system. The rock type is Harney Peak granite, a 1.7-billion-year-old pink granite that erodes into the sharp vertical fins the area is known for.
