Description

What it is

This is the Black Hills National Forest design in the Black Hills and Nebraska Panhandle collectible token series, a small struck-metal token made for collecting and display.

About the design

The front shows the stone fire lookout that crowns the highest summit in the Black Hills, ringed by the words “Harney Peak Elev. 7,242, Black Elk Wilderness.” The wording on the token reflects the older Harney Peak name; the summit is now officially Black Elk Peak. The reverse carries the U.S. Forest Service shield and “Black Hills National Forest, Est. 1897.”

About the forest

The Black Hills National Forest was established in 1897 and covers more than a million acres across western South Dakota and into Wyoming. Its highest point, reached on foot through the Black Elk Wilderness, is the highest point in South Dakota and the Black Hills.

How the tokens work

Each token carries the park or forest name on one side and a related image on the other. Collectors keep them in a token album with slotted pages, the same way pressed-penny and challenge-coin collections are stored. Tokens and albums are sold separately so you can build the set one site at a time.

Who is this for

A fitting keepsake for hikers who have made the climb to the lookout, and the forest piece for collectors finishing the seven-token Black Hills and Nebraska set.

Frequently asked questions

Is this legal tender?
No. It is a souvenir collectible token, not currency.

Can I order a large quantity?
BHPFA reviews token orders before shipping and does not fill bulk orders intended for resale on other platforms. If you need several of one token for personal collections, note that in the checkout fields.

Does buying this support the forest?
BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.

Every Purchase Makes a Difference

When you shop with Black Hills Parks & Forests Association, you are directly funding:

  • Education programs — nature workshops, Junior Ranger activities, and homeschool adventures for kids across the Black Hills
  • Trail maintenance — keeping hiking trails safe and accessible at Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, and the Black Hills National Forest
  • Visitor services — park store operations, interpretive programs, and the staff who help millions of visitors each year
  • Conservation — supporting the long-term health of public lands in the Black Hills and Nebraska

BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service in the Black Hills region. We have supported these public lands since 1946.
