Description

What is this shirt?

This is the long-sleeve version of the Wind Cave bison sketch tee, made by Wild Tribute 4 the Parks. It is a heather green cotton and polyester blend with a blue print on the front chest. We sell it at the Wind Cave National Park visitor center bookstore, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and here online.

Wild Tribute designs for individual parks rather than generic outdoor themes. The label inside the collar reads “4 the Parks” because they donate 4% of proceeds to national parks and public lands.

What is on it

One print, front chest. The back is plain.

The outline of a standing bison is filled with a cross-section of the park, split by a ground line. Above that line: the sun coming up behind rolling hills, clouds, stands of ponderosa pine, a small bridge in the middle distance, and the bison herd spread across the prairie with elk along the right edge. Below the line: the cave. Formations hang from the ceiling on the left, the walls carry rounded nodules and a section of angular intersecting fins, which is the boxwork Wind Cave is known for, and two small figures stand in lit passages, one in the bison’s front leg and one in the hind leg. “Wind Cave National Park” is hand-lettered in white at the lower left.

The print is blue and off-white. From across a room it reads as a bison. Up close there is a lot to pick out.

About Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave sits in the southern Black Hills, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs, South Dakota. It became the seventh national park in the United States on January 9, 1903, when Theodore Roosevelt signed the designation, and it was the first national park established specifically to protect a cave.

The cave has roughly 161 miles of surveyed passages, which makes it the seventh longest cave in the world and the fourth longest in the United States. Its defining feature is boxwork, the honeycomb-patterned calcite fins that show up in the lower half of this print. Wind Cave holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork.

Above ground, the park manages a free-roaming bison herd descended from 14 animals transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the earliest bison restoration efforts in North America. The design puts that herd and the cave beneath it in the same silhouette.

Who is this for?

Anyone who has taken a cave tour and then passed the herd on the drive out. That is the whole design: the bison on top, the cave underneath, in one animal. People who have been to the park tend to recognize it right away.

It is also a practical layer for that trip. Mornings in the southern Black Hills stay cold well into June, and the cave is cool year round.

If you already have the short-sleeve version of this artwork in royal blue, this is the same bison on a warmer garment in a different color.

Frequently asked questions

What is the design on this shirt?
A bison outline filled with a cross-section of Wind Cave National Park. The upper half is the surface: sunrise, hills, ponderosa pine, and the bison herd on the prairie. The lower half is the cave: hanging formations, boxwork fins on the walls, and two small figures standing in lit passages. “Wind Cave National Park” is lettered at the lower left.

Is there a print on the back?
No. The print is on the front chest only. The back is plain heather green.

What is it made of?
A 60% cotton, 40% polyester blend.

Where is it made?
Printed in the USA and sewn in Nicaragua, per the collar label.

How do I care for it?
Wash cold and hang dry. That is what Wild Tribute prints inside the collar, and hang drying keeps the print from cracking.

How do the sizes run?
Adult unisex, standard fit, Small through 2XL. If you are between sizes or plan to layer it, go up one.

Is this the same design as the short-sleeve tee?
Yes, it is the same bison sketch artwork. The short-sleeve version is royal blue. This is the long sleeve in heather green.

Is this available at the Wind Cave visitor center?
Yes. Black Hills Parks and Forests Association operates the bookstore inside the Wind Cave National Park visitor center, and this shirt is sold there as well as through this online shop.

Does buying this support the park?
Yes, twice. Black Hills Parks & Forests Association is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, along with the Black Hills National Forest and the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites. Wild Tribute separately donates 4% of their proceeds to national parks and public lands.

Who makes this shirt?
Wild Tribute 4 the Parks, a national-parks apparel brand that designs for specific parks rather than generic outdoor themes.
