Description

What is the Wind Cave National Park youth hoodie?

This is a youth pullover hoodie with a Wind Cave National Park graphic, sold through BHPFA’s online store and at the park’s visitor center in Hot Springs, South Dakota. It comes in black, fits youth sizes Small (6-8) through Large (14-16), and has a shipping weight of 16 oz. The blank is a cotton/polyester fleece pullover with a front pouch pocket, rib knit cuffs, and a banded waistband with an unlined hood and drawcord.

The front graphic is a circular design with “Wind Cave National Park” arched across the top, a textured bison illustration in the center, and “One Park / Two Worlds / South Dakota” across the lower arc. That phrase reflects what Wind Cave actually is: an underground cave system covering about 161 miles of mapped passages, and a mixed-grass prairie on the surface with a free-roaming bison herd, all managed as one national park unit. Two worlds, one park boundary.

BHPFA operates the bookstore at the Wind Cave visitor center. Every purchase made there and through this store funds education programs, conservation work, and visitor services at the park.

Size and fit

The hoodie is cut for youth sizing: Small fits approximately ages 6-8, Medium fits 10-12, and Large fits 14-16. The fit is a classic youth pullover shape with a standard hood. Younger kids who run warm may want to size down; if your kid wears it as a light outer layer over a long sleeve shirt, standard sizing should work.

The adult version of this hoodie (Wind Cave National Park Adult Hoodie, SKU 2569) uses a different graphic design but the same black colorway. If you are buying for a teen who wears adult sizing, check the adult listing.

About Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park is in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs on US-385. It became the 7th national park in the United States on January 9, 1903, when Theodore Roosevelt signed the legislation. It was the first national park established specifically to protect a cave.

The cave was discovered in 1881 by Tom and Jesse Bingham, who heard wind rushing from a small hole in the ground. The cave system has about 161 miles of mapped passages, putting it 7th longest in the world and 4th longest in the US. Wind Cave has an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork, a honeycomb-patterned calcite formation that appears in most caves in trace amounts but lines entire rooms and ceilings here.

Above ground, the park’s mixed-grass prairie supports one of the earliest bison restoration herds in North America. The herd of around 350-400 animals descended from 14 bison transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913. Elk, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets also share the park. NPS-guided cave tours run year-round at different difficulty levels.

Who is this for?

Kids who visited Wind Cave on a family trip, or who are heading there and want a layer for cool Black Hills mornings and cave temperatures (the cave stays around 53 degrees Fahrenheit year-round). The “One Park / Two Worlds” graphic gives them something to explain to classmates: yes, there are bison above and a massive cave below, in the same park.

It also works as a gift for any kid interested in caves, wildlife, or national parks. At 16 oz it is a real pullover hoodie that will get worn past the trip, not a thin souvenir cotton shell.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are available?
Youth Small (6-8), Medium (10-12), and Large (14-16). For older teens in adult sizing, BHPFA carries a Wind Cave adult hoodie in S through XXL.

What does the graphic say?
The front is a circular graphic that reads “Wind Cave National Park / One Park / Two Worlds / South Dakota” with a textured bison illustration in the center. “One Park / Two Worlds” refers to the park having both a major cave system underground and a wildlife-filled prairie on the surface, managed as one unit.

How do I wash this hoodie?
Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Turn inside out to protect the screen-printed graphic. Do not bleach. Confirm against the actual garment care label before washing, as instructions can vary by production run.

Is Wind Cave a national park or a national monument?
Wind Cave is a national park, established in 1903. It is the 7th national park in the US. Jewel Cave, about 25 miles northwest on US-16, is a national monument. Both are BHPFA partner sites and the bookstores at both visitor centers carry BHPFA merchandise.

What is the cave temperature at Wind Cave?
The cave maintains a constant temperature of about 53 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) year-round. A light layer like this hoodie is practical for cave tours even on a hot summer day, especially for kids who run cold.

What is boxwork?
Boxwork is a calcite formation that looks like a honeycomb of thin fins on cave walls and ceilings. Wind Cave has an estimated 95% of all known boxwork in the world. It formed when calcite filled cracks in the surrounding limestone and the limestone slowly eroded away, leaving the calcite grid behind.

Does buying this support national parks?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.

Where is BHPFA’s Wind Cave store located?
The BHPFA bookstore is inside the Wind Cave visitor center at 26611 US-385, Hot Springs, SD 57747. It is open daily during park operating hours. Products are also available here online with shipping from South Dakota.
