Wind Cave National Park clay mug
This is a Deneen Pottery mug, which means it’s handmade stoneware, not a mass-produced ceramic. Deneen has been making mugs in St. Paul, Minnesota since 1972. Each one is thrown on a potter’s wheel and goes through the hands of over 24 people during production. The result is a heavy, well-made mug where no two come out exactly the same.
The medallion on this mug is the Wind Cave “One Park, Two Worlds” design: an elk on the prairie above ground and a caver in the cave system below. It’s a 14 oz mug in a dark blue glaze with cinnamon and white accents.

About Deneen Pottery
Deneen Pottery is a family-run business in St. Paul, Minnesota. Peter and Mary Deneen started it in their garage in 1972. Today they have over 50 craftspeople and a solar-powered production facility. Their mugs are sold at national parks, state parks, breweries, lodges, and restaurants across the country. The BHPFA Wind Cave mug is one of their custom designs, made exclusively for us.

Is this mug dishwasher safe?
Yes. Dishwasher, microwave, conventional oven, and freezer safe. It’s made to be used every day.
Is it lead-free?
Yes. All Deneen Pottery is lead-free, cadmium-free, and fully food-safe.
What does “hand-thrown” mean?
Each mug is shaped on a potter’s wheel by hand, not poured into a mold. That’s why no two mugs are exactly the same. You’ll see slight variations in size, glaze, and color. That’s the point.
Why is the glaze slightly different on mine?
Handmade pottery. The glaze reacts differently each time it goes through the kiln. Deneen calls this “the nature of handmade pottery.” Some mugs will have more cinnamon showing, some more blue. Both are normal.
Can I collect Deneen mugs from different parks?
Yes, and many people do. Deneen makes custom mugs for national parks, state parks, and other destinations across the country. Each location has its own unique design and glaze combination.
What’s the medallion design?
The “One Park, Two Worlds” design shows Wind Cave’s two ecosystems: an elk on the mixed-grass prairie above and a caver exploring the cave system below. Wind Cave is one of the longest caves in the world, sitting beneath one of the last remaining mixed-grass prairies.
Does buying this support Wind Cave National Park?
Yes. Proceeds support conservation, education, and visitor services at Wind Cave through Black Hills Parks & Forests Association.
Will it break if I drop it?
It’s stoneware, so it’s heavier and more durable than standard ceramic mugs. But it’s still pottery. Don’t drop it on tile.
