Description

What is a BARK Ranger tag?

A collar tag for dogs on national park trips, made by L.W. Bristol Classics for Wind Cave National Park. Enameled metal, badge-shaped. Bison and prairie on the front, L.W. Bristol Classics stamp on the back. It clips onto a collar D-ring with an S-hook.

Wind Cave has its own BARK Ranger program. Wind Cave’s BARK Ranger mascot is “Brownie,” a leashed dog who models the rules on the Prairie Vista Trail.

B.A.R.K. stands for: Bag your pet’s waste, Always wear a leash, Respect wildlife, and Know where you can go.

L.W. Bristol Classics has made souvenirs for national parks and trails for decades out of Bristol, Tennessee. This tag is in the same Wind Cave line as the Wind Cave Classic Pin and the Wind Cave Bison Pin.

Where your dog can go at Wind Cave

Dogs are welcome in the grassy areas near the visitor center, at the Elk Mountain Campground, on the Prairie Vista Trail, and on the Elk Mountain Campground Trail. The rest of the park is off-limits to pets.

That means no cave tours, no ranger-led programs, no visitor center, no backcountry. Leashes are six feet max. Bag the waste and carry it out. Do not leave a dog in a parked car here. Summer heat on the prairie builds fast, and even faster in your car.

Wind Cave’s prairie has a bison herd of roughly 350 to 400 animals, plus elk, pronghorn, and prairie dog colonies. Bison are not scenery. They do not tolerate a loose dog, and the leash rule is what keeps everybody out of trouble.

Who is this for?

Anyone bringing a dog on a Black Hills trip who wants a doggo-specific souvenir from the park.

A pin ends up in a drawer. A collar tag gets seen on every walk after the trip is over.

Jewel Cave National Monument has its own version, the Jewel Cave BARK Ranger Pet Tag. Most people doing both caves on one trip pick up both.

Frequently asked questions

What does B.A.R.K. stand for?
Bag your pet’s waste. Always wear a leash. Respect wildlife. Know where you can go. It is a National Park Service program, and each park sets its own version of the rules around those four.

Does my dog have to do anything to earn the tag?
No. It is sold in the park store and you can buy it for any dog. Some parks do BARK Ranger swearing-in events at the visitor center. Check with Wind Cave to see if anything is scheduled during your visit.

Can my dog go on a cave tour?
No. No pets on cave tours, ranger-led programs, or inside the visitor center. Service animals are a separate situation — contact the park ahead of your visit.

Which Wind Cave trails allow dogs?
The Prairie Vista Trail and the Elk Mountain Campground Trail. Dogs can also be in the grassy areas near the visitor center, at the Elk Mountain Campground, and on park roads and parking areas. Most other trails and the backcountry are closed to pets.

How long can the leash be?
Six feet max. That is a park rule, not a suggestion. It exists because of the bison and elk.

Is there a Jewel Cave version?
Yes. The Jewel Cave BARK Ranger Pet Tag is the same idea for Jewel Cave National Monument, about 45 minutes away.

Does buying this support national parks?
BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.

Every Purchase Makes a Difference
