What is a BARK Ranger tag?
A collar tag for dogs on national park trips, made by L.W. Bristol Classics for Jewel Cave National Monument. Enameled metal, badge-shaped. The historic Jewel Cave cabin and ponderosa pines on the front, L.W. Bristol Classics stamp on the back. It clips onto a collar D-ring with an S-hook.
B.A.R.K. stands for

The rules are the same across the Park Service, but where dogs can actually go changes from site to site. At a cave site like Jewel Cave, they’re on a tight leash, so to speak.
L.W. Bristol Classics has made souvenirs for national parks and trails for decades out of Bristol, Tennessee. This tag is in the same Jewel Cave line as the Jewel Cave Classic Patch and the monument’s pins.
Where your dog can go at Jewel Cave
Dogs are welcome in the picnic areas near the visitor center, in the Jewel Cave Historic Area, and on the parking lots and roads. That covers it. Everything else is off-limits.
No hiking trails, no service roads, no visitor center interior, no cave, no historic cabin or cave entrance. Leashes are six feet max. Nobody goes in the cave but the ticketed humans.
Jewel Cave is the third-longest cave in the world at more than 220 mapped miles, and everything above it is ponderosa pine forest. The dog-friendly ground is the developed area near the visitor center and the historic site, which is great for a walk while someone else in your group is underground.
Who is this for?
Anyone bringing a dog on a Black Hills trip who wants something from the monument besides a sticker. It goes on the collar next to the ID tag.
It also works as a practical reminder. The rules at a cave site are tighter than most people expect, and glancing at four lines on a collar tag before the trip beats reading the sign in the parking lot after the dog is already out of the car.
Wind Cave National Park has its own version, the Wind Cave BARK Ranger Pet Tag. Wind Cave is about 45 minutes south with more trail open to dogs, so most people doing both caves grab both tags.

Can my dog go on the cave tour?
No. No pets in the cave, on the trails, or inside the visitor center. If part of your group is touring, the picnic areas and the Historic Area are where the dog hangs out. Service animals are a separate situation — call the monument ahead of time.
Where exactly can my dog go at Jewel Cave?
The picnic areas near the visitor center, the Jewel Cave Historic Area, and the paved parking lots and roads. That’s it.
How long can the leash be?
Six feet max, and your dog stays under control the whole time.
Do I have to sign my dog up for anything?
No. The tag is sold in the park store. You buy it, you clip it on. Some parks do BARK Ranger events at the visitor center — check with Jewel Cave to see what’s happening during your visit.
Is there a Wind Cave version?
Yes. The Wind Cave BARK Ranger Pet Tag is the same idea for Wind Cave National Park, which has its own BARK Ranger program and more trail open to dogs.
