What is this shirt?
A heather blue long-sleeve tee in a soft cotton and polyester jersey, made for Black Hills Parks and Forests Association on a BELLA+CANVAS Heather CVC blank. It is a lightweight long sleeve. Good for a cool morning above the cave, and a sensible layer for the tour itself, which stays cold year round.

What is on it
The front chest carries a cream bat with its wings spread, above the words Jewel Cave National Monument. Small, one color, nothing else.
The back is a square set on point, outlined in dark navy with a cream sawtooth border inside it. Inside that is a painting of cave bacon. A tall ribbon of flowstone runs down the middle in orange and cream, banded along its whole length and lit from behind, with dark rock either side of it and boulders at the bottom. A bat sits at each of the four points of the diamond. A cream banner crosses the lower half with Jewel Cave lettered on it, and National Monument runs underneath.
What cave bacon is
Cave bacon is a drapery, a kind of flowstone. Water runs down an overhung wall and leaves behind a thin layer of calcite, then does it again, and again, until a ribbon builds out from the rock. The bands are impurities. Minerals carried in the water get left behind as it evaporates, and they come out red, orange and yellow. Light behind the ribbon passes through the thin calcite and the stripes show. The National Park Service puts the strand on the Scenic Tour route at twenty feet long.
You can go see it. The Scenic Tour is a half mile loop with 734 stair steps and takes about an hour and twenty minutes. It passes nailhead and dogtooth spar, boxwork, cave popcorn, stalactites, stalagmites and the cave bacon. There is more about visiting on our Jewel Cave National Monument page.
