Are there really bats in Jewel Cave? Yes. Ten bat species use the monument, and the cave is an important place for them to spend the winter. It holds one of the largest known hibernating colonies of Townsend’s big-eared bats in the world. The 2018 mid-winter count found more than 1,400 bats hibernating in the cave, and the 2023-2024 count found 602, a drop the park attributes to white-nose syndrome.
