Description
What is the Smokey Bear head patch?
This is an embroidered sew-on patch featuring Smokey Bear’s face and his flat-brim ranger hat. The design shows Smokey’s portrait in full color, about 2⅛ inches square. It comes on a display card (2¾” x 4⅛”) ready for retail or gift giving.
It’s made by Impact Photographics, a California-based company that supplies souvenir products to national parks, forests, and monuments across the country. Impact Photographics is one of the USDA Forest Service’s official Smokey Bear licensees, so this is a genuine licensed product.
BHPFA sells it at park stores in the Black Hills and online. Like all BHPFA merchandise, proceeds go back into public lands programs: trail work, Junior Ranger activities, and visitor services at Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Scotts Bluff, and the Black Hills National Forest.
About Smokey Bear
Smokey Bear was introduced on August 9, 1944, as the mascot of a wildfire prevention campaign run by the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council. The slogan “Only YOU can prevent wildfires” became one of the longest-running and most recognized public service messages in the country.
Smokey’s image is a Congressional trademark, protected under federal law (PL 82-359). The Forest Service licenses it to manufacturers like Impact Photographics, and the royalties fund wildfire prevention education. When you buy an officially licensed Smokey Bear product, part of the price goes toward that work.
One common mistake: it’s “Smokey Bear,” not “Smokey the Bear.” The character never had a middle name. The confusion comes from a 1952 song by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins that added “the” to fit the melody.

Who is this for?
If you grew up hearing “Only YOU can prevent wildfires,” this patch lets you carry that with you. It works on jacket sleeves, backpacks, vests, hats, and camp chairs. It’s an easy add-on when you’re picking up gear at a Black Hills park store.
Patch collectors will find it fits into a larger set. BHPFA carries several Smokey Bear items and dozens of patches from across the Black Hills and Nebraska public lands. The Smokey Bear Standing Patch is the matching full-body version.
It also works as a small gift for anyone who spends time outdoors. Kids tend to like Smokey.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an iron-on or sew-on patch?
Sew-on. Attach it with a few stitches to any fabric surface. The manufacturer does not list iron-on backing for this patch.
Is this an officially licensed Smokey Bear product?
Yes. Impact Photographics, the manufacturer, is listed as an official Smokey Bear licensee on the USDA Forest Service website. Royalties from licensed Smokey Bear products fund wildfire prevention education.
Why does the listing say “Smokey Bear” instead of “Smokey the Bear”?
The character’s official name is Smokey Bear, with no middle name. “Smokey the Bear” comes from a 1952 song that added “the” to fit the rhythm. The Forest Service, the Ad Council, and all official licensing use “Smokey Bear.”
What’s the difference between this and the Smokey Bear Standing Patch?
This patch shows Smokey’s head and hat only (2⅛” x 2¼”). The Standing Patch shows the full-body Smokey with his shovel. Both are $4.99 and sew-on.
Does buying this support national parks and forests?
Yes, two ways. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and Scotts Bluff National Monument. Proceeds from your purchase fund programs at these sites. Separately, the Smokey Bear licensing royalties go to the USDA Forest Service for wildfire prevention education.
How do I attach this patch?
Sew it on with a needle and thread. Use a thread color that matches the patch edge and stitch around the border. A basic whip stitch or blanket stitch works. Takes about 10 minutes.
Can I put this on a backpack or hat?
Yes. It works on any fabric you can push a needle through: jackets, vests, backpacks, hats, canvas bags, camp chairs. For thicker materials like heavy canvas, use a heavier needle.
