Description
What is the Smokey Bear standing patch?
This is a small embroidered sew-on patch showing Smokey Bear in full, standing with his shovel. The patch measures 2 7/8″ x 1 5/8″, which is about the size of a business card and sits flat on a jacket sleeve or backpack flap without pulling the fabric. It is made by Impact Photographics, a California-based wholesaler that holds an official USDA Forest Service Smokey Bear license.
This is the full-body companion to the Smokey Bear Head Patch. One shows Smokey from the shoulders up in his ranger hat, the other shows him head-to-toe with the shovel he has carried since 1944. Both are $4.99 and both stitch onto the same kinds of gear.
BHPFA sells it at Black Hills park stores and online. Proceeds go back into public lands programs at BHPFA partner sites including the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
About Smokey Bear and the shovel
Smokey Bear was introduced on August 9, 1944, as the mascot of a wildfire prevention campaign run by the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council. The shovel has been part of the image from the beginning. It is the tool a firefighter uses to dig a fire line, turn over coals, and smother embers on the ground, and it became the practical counterpart to the slogan: dig, bury, and make sure a campfire is dead out before you leave it.
Smokey’s image is a Congressional trademark under federal law (PL 82-359). The Forest Service licenses it to manufacturers like Impact Photographics, and the royalties fund wildfire prevention education. Buying a licensed Smokey Bear product puts a small amount of the price toward that work.
One note on the name: it is Smokey Bear, not Smokey the Bear. The character never had a middle name. The “the” comes from a 1952 Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins song that added it to fit the melody.

Who is this for?
If you grew up seeing the Smokey Bear posters at the trailhead or the ranger station, this patch is a way to carry that image on gear you actually use. It fits on jacket sleeves, daypacks, vests, ball caps, and camp chairs.
Patch collectors will want to pair it with the Smokey Bear Head Patch for a matching set, one portrait and one full-body. Both are $4.99.
It also works as a small gift for kids, scouts, firefighters, and anyone who works outdoors.
Frequently asked questions
Is this iron-on or sew-on?
Sew-on. Attach it with a needle and thread, using a whip or blanket stitch around the border. It takes about 10 minutes per patch.
Is this officially licensed?
Yes. Impact Photographics is listed as an official Smokey Bear licensee by the USDA Forest Service. Royalties from licensed Smokey Bear products fund wildfire prevention education.
What’s the difference between this and the Smokey Bear Head Patch?
This patch shows the full-body Smokey with his shovel at 2 7/8″ x 1 5/8″. The Smokey Bear Head Patch shows Smokey’s portrait in his ranger hat at about 2 1/8″ x 2 1/4″. Same manufacturer, same price ($4.99), different poses. Many collectors get both.
Why is Smokey holding a shovel?
The shovel is a fire line tool. Firefighters use it to dig a trench around a fire to stop its spread, to turn over coals, and to smother embers with dirt. The image carries the practical message of the campaign: dig, bury, and make sure your campfire is dead out before you leave.
Is it Smokey Bear or Smokey the Bear?
Smokey Bear. No middle name. The “the” comes from a 1952 song and stuck in pop culture, but every official USDA Forest Service and Ad Council source uses “Smokey Bear.”
How big is 2 7/8 by 1 5/8 inches? Will it fit on a hat?
The patch is roughly the size of a business card, a little shorter and a little narrower. It fits on the front panel of a ball cap, on a jacket sleeve, or on the flap of a daypack. It is small enough that it will not bunch or curl on thinner fabrics.
Can I put this on a backpack?
Yes. It attaches to any fabric you can pass a needle through: jackets, vests, backpacks, hats, canvas bags, camp chairs. Use a heavier needle for canvas or denim.
Does buying this support national parks and forests?
BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
