What is the Hudson Meng Bison Kill patch?
An embroidered patch for the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill site in the Oglala National Grassland of northwest Nebraska. The patch features Bison Antiquus, the ancient bison species whose bones were discovered here. Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a family-owned manufacturer in Bristol, Tennessee that has produced collectible patches and hiking medallions for national parks, forests, and grasslands across the country for decades.
The patch measures 2 7/16″ x 3 7/16″ and is die-cut, which means the shape follows the contour of the design rather than sitting on a standard square or circle base. About the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill site
The Hudson-Meng site sits in Sioux County, Nebraska, about 20 miles northwest of Crawford. In 1954, local ranchers Bill Hudson and Albert Meng discovered bison bones while excavating for a pond. What they found turned out to be roughly 600 bison remains dating back approximately 10,000 years, belonging to the now-extinct Bison Antiquus, the predecessor to the modern American bison.
The site was long called a kill site, but research by Drs. Larry Todd and David Rapson in the 1990s found no evidence of a human-organized hunt. The bison appear to have died of unknown natural causes, and the “kill site” name stayed because it was already established in the literature and common usage. The bone bed itself is still one of the most concentrated and well-preserved Bison Antiquus deposits in North America.
The Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center operates seasonally on the Oglala National Grassland, managed by the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands, USDA Forest Service. A 3-mile hiking trail connects the site to Toadstool Geologic Park. Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands is one of BHPFA’s two USFS partner units.
