What is this ornament?
This laser-cut wood ornament captures the character of the Black Hills National Forest on a 3.5-inch piece of hardwood: Black Elk Peak (the highest point east of the Rockies at 7,242 feet), elk, ponderosa pine, a rock climber, an ATV, and a hiking boot. The design was created specifically for BHPFA by Nestled Pines Woodworking, which has produced custom ornaments for national parks and nature organizations for more than a decade.
The Black Hills National Forest covers about 1.25 million acres across South Dakota and Wyoming. It includes Black Elk Peak, Pactola Reservoir, Spearfish Canyon, and the Sylvan Lake area. Unlike the NPS units in the Black Hills (Wind Cave, Jewel Cave), it is managed by the US Forest Service. BHPFA is the cooperating association for the forest and operates retail locations within it. The design on this ornament reflects the range of activities and landmarks the forest is known for: wildlife, climbing, mountain biking, ATV trails, and hiking.
