Description

What is the Smokey Bear mini building block set?

This is a 260-piece ABS plastic block set that builds a 4-inch standing Smokey Bear holding his fire shovel. The blocks are smaller than standard Lego-style bricks, closer to the size of a pea, and the finished figurine is a display piece rather than a toy to play with. Color-coded instructions walk builders through the assembly step by step.

It’s made by Impact Photographics, a California company that supplies souvenir products to national parks, forests, and monuments across the country. Impact Photographics is one of the USDA Forest Service’s official Smokey Bear licensees, so this is a genuine licensed product. Royalties from licensed Smokey Bear products fund wildfire prevention education.

BHPFA stocks it at the Black Hills National Forest park stores and online. Like all BHPFA merchandise, proceeds go back into public lands programs: trail work, Junior Ranger activities, and visitor services at Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Scotts Bluff, Agate Fossil Beds, the Black Hills National Forest, and the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands.

Who is this for?

If someone in your life grew up hearing “Only YOU can prevent wildfires,” this is the desk or shelf piece that carries the message. It’s an easy gift for a Junior Ranger, a firefighter, a teacher, or anyone who spends time in national forests.

Kids in the 7 to 12 range tend to enjoy the challenge (the pieces are small and the instructions run to several steps), and adults who like the quiet focus of a model kit will finish it in about an hour. The assembled figurine is small enough to sit on a monitor stand or a shelf without taking over.

It also works as a stocking stuffer, a classroom reward, or a thank-you for someone who already owns the usual Smokey Bear patches and pins.

About Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear was introduced on August 9, 1944, as the character for a wildfire prevention campaign run by the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council. “Only YOU can prevent wildfires” is one of the longest-running public service messages in the country.

Smokey’s image is a Congressional trademark, protected under federal law (PL 82-359). The Forest Service licenses it to manufacturers like Impact Photographics, and the royalties fund wildfire prevention education. When you buy an officially licensed Smokey Bear product, part of the price goes toward that work.

A common mix-up: it’s “Smokey Bear,” not “Smokey the Bear.” The character never had a middle name. The confusion traces back to a 1952 song by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins that added “the” to fit the melody.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the finished figurine?
Four inches tall, about 1 9/16″ square at the base. It fits in the palm of an adult hand.

How long does it take to build?
Most adults finish in 45 to 75 minutes. Kids 7 to 12 take longer, often spread across more than one sitting. The pieces are small, so a tray or a bowl to corral them helps.

Are these compatible with Lego blocks?
No. Mini building blocks are smaller than standard Lego bricks and use a different peg size. They’re meant to stay in the completed figurine, not to mix with other brick systems.

Is this an officially licensed Smokey Bear product?
Yes. Impact Photographics, the manufacturer, holds a Smokey Bear license from the USDA Forest Service. Royalties from licensed Smokey Bear products fund wildfire prevention education. The license information is printed on the packaging.

What age is it good for?
Ages 7 and up. The set contains small parts that are a choking hazard for children under 3, and the assembly requires patience and fine motor control that most kids under 7 don’t have yet.

Why does the listing say “Smokey Bear” instead of “Smokey the Bear”?
The character’s official name is Smokey Bear, with no middle name. “Smokey the Bear” comes from a 1952 song that added “the” to fit the rhythm. The Forest Service, the Ad Council, and all official licensing use “Smokey Bear.”

Does buying this support national parks and forests?
Yes, two ways. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites. Separately, Smokey Bear licensing royalties go to the USDA Forest Service for wildfire prevention education.

Can the finished figurine come apart?
Yes. The blocks press-fit, so a drop or a squeeze can separate pieces. The color-coded instructions make reassembly straightforward.
