Description
What are the Black Hills National Forest socks?
A unisex mid-calf sock from McGovern & Co. with a stylized map of the Black Hills National Forest printed from cuff to toe. The design names the ranger districts, major peaks, reservoirs, and the rough outline of the 1.25 million acres of public land that stretches across western South Dakota and into Wyoming. It is a souvenir map, not a navigational one. McGovern labels every pair with the reminder that the print is not intended for compass orientation.
Under the print, the sock itself is built for actual use. Athletic ribbing holds the cuff up at mid-calf, a shaped arch band keeps the foot bed from bunching, and the bottom of the sock, the heel, and the toe box all get extra cushioning. The blend (43% polyester, 30% spandex, 14% nylon, 13% cotton) gives stretch and moisture handling without going all-synthetic, and the small amount of cotton adds some softness against the skin.
McGovern & Co. is a women-led national-parks apparel brand that got its start with vintage-style park maps and expanded into socks, drinkware, and other small souvenirs built around those map designs. Their sock line covers dozens of parks and forests across the country; BHPFA carries the one tied to our home forest.

Size and fit
One-size-fits-most is a range, not a guarantee. The cuff is ribbed and stretches, the foot bed has spandex through it, and the 9″ height sits at mid-calf on average adult builds. On a US men’s 12 or 13 the sock will pull up closer to the ankle than the calf. On a US women’s 6 or 7 the extra length will bunch slightly at the ankle. Anywhere in the middle (roughly US men’s 7 to 11 / women’s 8 to 12) is the sweet spot.
About the Black Hills National Forest
The Black Hills National Forest covers about 1.25 million acres across the Black Hills of South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. It includes Black Elk Peak (7,242 ft, the highest point in the United States east of the Rockies), Pactola Reservoir, Spearfish Canyon, and the Sylvan Lake area. The US Forest Service manages the forest, and BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner that operates interpretive bookstores and funds education and conservation work across the land.

Who are these for?
Hikers and runners. The cushioning on the bottom, heel, and toes is the reason to pick a sock like this over a plain cotton pair. It handles full days in hiking boots or trail runners without the hot spots cotton tends to produce. The synthetic blend also dries faster after a stream crossing or a sweaty afternoon.
Souvenir shoppers. A wearable map is a better souvenir than another magnet. If you have been to the Black Hills, the sock becomes a mild conversation piece the next time someone notices the print at the top of your calf.
Gift buyers. At $14.99 they work as a standalone gift for a Black Hills hiker or as an add-on to a larger gift set. They pair naturally with a Black Hills National Forest sticker, patch, or hat.
Care instructions
Machine wash warm (40°C / 104°F). No bleach. Do not iron (the print will not survive a hot iron face). Tumble dry low to preserve the elastic at the cuff. The print is built into the yarn rather than screen-printed on top, so it will not crack or peel through normal washing.
Frequently asked questions
What size are these socks?
Unisex one-size-fits-most. The cuff and foot bed both stretch, and the sock sits at mid-calf (about 9″ above the ankle). The comfortable range is roughly US men’s 7 to 11 and women’s 8 to 12.
Are these hiking socks or dress socks?
Hiking socks. Athletic ribbed, arch support, and cushioning on the bottom, heel, and toes. The synthetic blend (polyester, spandex, nylon) with a touch of cotton is built for active use, not for a dress shoe.
What is the fabric?
43% polyester, 30% spandex, 14% nylon, 13% cotton. The polyester and nylon handle moisture, the spandex provides stretch and shape recovery, and the small cotton percentage softens the hand feel.
Can I use the map on the sock for navigation?
No. The print is a stylized souvenir map. McGovern labels every pair with the reminder “Maps are not intended for compass orientation.” Use a National Geographic Trails Illustrated map or the US Forest Service map for real navigation.
How do I wash them?
Machine wash warm at 40°C / 104°F. No bleach. No iron. Tumble dry low. The design is printed into the yarn rather than applied on top, so the graphic holds up through repeated washes.
Who makes these?
McGovern & Co., a women-led national-parks apparel brand. Their sock line features printed map and photo designs for dozens of US parks and forests. BHPFA carries the Black Hills National Forest pair as part of our forest-themed apparel.
Does buying this support the Black Hills National Forest?

BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
