What is the Black Hills magnet?
It is a 3.5″ x 2.5″ magnet printed with a hand-drawn watercolor map of the Black Hills region. Xplorer Maps, a family-owned illustration studio in Missoula, Montana, makes these. The art is by Chris Robitaille, Xplorer’s co-founder and illustrator, drawn in the warm earth-tone watercolor style the company uses across their full product line. The design includes regional landmarks, bison, elk, and wildflowers. The backing is full magnetic, which means the hold is consistent across the whole surface rather than just along the edges.
At $4.99, it is one of the lower-cost ways to take a piece of the Black Hills artwork home. It fits in a card envelope, packs flat in any bag, and holds up to the fridge or locker door without curling. About the artwork
Chris Robitaille draws each Xplorer map by hand. The Black Hills magnet uses the same illustrated map style as Xplorer’s other Black Hills products: warm earth tones, regional wildlife, and landmarks drawn with enough detail to be interesting up close. The design covers the Black Hills region broadly, including the national forest area, wildlife like bison and elk, and regional flora.
If you already have the Xplorer Maps wooden postcard or one of their mugs, the magnet uses the same underlying map art at a smaller scale. They look good displayed together.

What is the best way to display it if I am not putting it on a fridge?
Any metal surface works: filing cabinets, locker doors, magnetic whiteboards, magnetic knife strips. If you want to display it on a non-metal surface, a small adhesive magnetic strip on the back of a picture frame gives you a mounting point. The magnet itself will not damage most surfaces.
