Black Hills map mug
This is McGovern & Company’s “Inside Out” map mug for the Black Hills. Twelve ounces, ceramic, about four inches tall. The inside of the cup is a vintage-style map of the region. The outside is a hand-drawn cartouche of Cathedral Spires, the granite formation that rises above the ponderosa pines in Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest.
The map on the interior is the point. When you hold the mug up to drink, you are looking down at a small topographic view of the region you are either standing in, planning a trip to, or missing. Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument are both on it, along with Mount Rushmore and other regional landmarks. It is artwork, not a navigation tool. McGovern prints a small disclaimer on the box that says “Maps are not intended for compass orientation,” which is a good line.
McGovern & Company is a women-led business that makes national-parks drinkware. Their Inside Out line runs across dozens of parks, with a different interior map and exterior cartouche for each one. If you have one on your shelf from Acadia or Yellowstone, this is the same shape and construction, Black Hills edition.

No. BHPFA also carries a 16 oz ceramic mug in a different style with original artwork. This one is the 12 oz Inside Out map edition from McGovern & Company. Different capacity, different artwork, different manufacturer.

Does this mug have a Passport stamp location?
The mug itself is not a Passport item. If you are collecting cancellation stamps, the Passport to Your National Parks program includes Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave NM, Scotts Bluff NM, and Agate Fossil Beds NM among BHPFA sites. National Forest visitor centers do not have Passport stamps (the program is NPS only).
