Description

What are the bison socks?

A unisex mid-calf sock from McGovern & Co. with an all-over bison silhouette print on a deep teal blue ground. The pattern repeats the standing-bison shape across the cuff, calf, and foot, with smaller scattered shapes filling the field. It is a wildlife-themed sock built around the animal that defines the Wind Cave prairie above the cave system, not a literal park-map design.

Under the print, the sock itself is built for actual use. Athletic ribbing holds the cuff up at mid-calf, a shaped arch band keeps the foot bed from bunching, and the bottom of the sock, the heel, and the toe box all get extra cushioning. The blend (43% polyester, 30% spandex, 14% nylon, 13% cotton) gives stretch and moisture handling without going all-synthetic, and the small amount of cotton softens the hand feel against the skin.

McGovern & Co. is a women-led national-parks apparel brand. They started with vintage-style park map prints and expanded into wildlife-pattern socks, drinkware, and other small souvenirs. Their sock line covers dozens of parks, animals, and forests across the country. BHPFA carries the bison pair at our Wind Cave National Park store, where free-roaming bison live on the prairie above the cave.

Size and fit

One-size-fits-most is a range, not a guarantee. The cuff is ribbed and stretches, the foot bed has spandex through it, and the 9″ height sits at mid-calf on average adult builds. On a US men’s 12 or 13 the sock will pull up closer to the ankle than the calf. On a US women’s 6 or 7 the extra length will bunch slightly at the ankle. Anywhere in the middle (roughly US men’s 7 to 11 / women’s 8 to 12) is the comfortable range.

About the Wind Cave bison herd

Wind Cave National Park in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota holds one of the earliest bison restoration herds in North America. The current free-roaming herd of about 350 to 400 head descends from 14 bison transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, after market hunting had reduced the species from millions to a few hundred animals nationwide. The herd shares the park’s mixed-grass prairie with elk, prairie dog colonies, and the black-footed ferret recovery effort. Bison sightings are common along the loop drive, especially around dawn and dusk.

Who are these for?

Hikers and runners. The cushioning on the bottom, heel, and toes is the reason to pick a sock like this over a plain cotton pair. It handles full days in hiking boots or trail runners without the hot spots cotton tends to produce. The synthetic blend also dries faster after a creek crossing or a sweaty afternoon.

Wildlife and bison fans. A wildlife-pattern sock is a quieter way to wear what you like than another graphic tee. The pattern reads as bison up close and as a textured solid teal from a few feet away.

Wind Cave visitors and gift buyers. At $14.99 they work as a standalone Wind Cave souvenir or as an add-on to a larger gift. They pair naturally with a Wind Cave sticker, hiking medallion, or hat from the same park store.

Care instructions

Machine wash at 40°C / 104°F on a delicate cycle. No bleach. No iron (a hot iron face will damage the print). Tumble dry low to keep the cuff elastic intact. The pattern is knitted into the yarn rather than screen-printed on top, so it does not crack or peel through normal washing.

Frequently asked questions

What size are these socks?
Unisex one-size-fits-most. The cuff and foot bed both stretch, and the sock sits at mid-calf (about 9″ above the ankle). The comfortable range is roughly US men’s 7 to 11 and women’s 8 to 12.

Are these hiking socks or dress socks?
Hiking socks. Athletic ribbed, arch support, and cushioning on the bottom, heel, and toes. The synthetic blend (polyester, spandex, nylon) with a touch of cotton is built for active use, not for a dress shoe.

What is the fabric?
43% polyester, 30% spandex, 14% nylon, 13% cotton. The polyester and nylon handle moisture, the spandex provides stretch and shape recovery, and the small cotton percentage softens the hand feel.

What does the pattern look like?
An all-over bison silhouette print on a deep teal blue ground. The shapes repeat across the cuff, calf, and foot. From a distance the sock reads as textured teal; up close, the bison shapes are clear.

How do I wash them?
Machine wash at 40°C / 104°F on delicate. No bleach. No iron. Tumble dry low. The design is knitted into the yarn rather than printed on top, so the graphic holds up through repeated washes.

Who makes these?
McGovern & Co., a women-led national-parks apparel brand. Their sock line features wildlife patterns, park maps, and WPA poster designs for dozens of US parks and forests. BHPFA carries the bison pair at the Wind Cave store.

Where can I see real bison at Wind Cave?
The free-roaming herd uses the mixed-grass prairie above the cave. Drive the loop road from US-385 between Hot Springs and Custer slowly, especially around dawn and dusk. Stay in your vehicle when the herd is near the road. Bison are unpredictable, fast, and large.

Does buying this support Wind Cave National Park?
Yes. Proceeds support Wind Cave National Park and other BHPFA partner parks and forests. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands.
