What is the Alvin McDonald Diary?
This is a facsimile reproduction of the handwritten diary kept by Alvin McDonald, the young explorer who spent four years systematically mapping Wind Cave in the early 1890s. The original diary is a primary historical document of the cave and is on permanent display at the Wind Cave National Park Visitor Center. This replica is the only version available for purchase, and it is sold exclusively through Black Hills Parks & Forests Association.
McDonald began exploring Wind Cave at age 16 in 1889 and kept a detailed journal of everything he found: passage names he invented, rooms he blasted open, specimens he collected, visitor groups he guided. He was thorough enough that major new sections of the cave were not discovered until 1963, seventy years after his death. His signature and string markers are still occasionally found today by survey teams pushing into unmapped areas.
About Alvin McDonald
Alvin Frank McDonald was born on April 3, 1873, in Franklin County, Iowa. His family moved to the Hot Springs area, and by 1889 he was exploring Wind Cave with his brother Elmer. He called himself “the Permanent Guide of Wind Cave” and later served as a guide for the Wonderful Wind Cave Improvement Company, formed in 1892.
McDonald mapped roughly 8 to 10 miles of passages using candlelight and a ball of string. He named the rooms: “Monte Cristo’s Palace,” “Mound Builders Rest,” “Chamber of Frost.” He wrote in the diary that he had “given up the idea of finding the end of Wind Cave,” which turned out to be accurate. The cave now has 161 surveyed miles.
In 1893, McDonald traveled to Chicago for the World’s Columbian Exposition, bringing cave specimens. He contracted typhoid fever there and died on December 15, 1893, at age 20. His grave and memorial are near Wind Cave’s natural entrance.
In August 1981, his original diary was donated to Wind Cave National Park by Inez Foley McDonald. In September 2010, the original was sent to the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia for professional restoration and duplication. The replica sold here descends from that process.

Who was Alvin McDonald?
Alvin Frank McDonald (1873-1893) was a self-taught cave explorer who began mapping Wind Cave at age 16 and continued until his death at 20. He is considered the first person to systematically document Wind Cave’s passages and is widely regarded as the cave’s first true explorer.
