What is this ornament?
This laser-cut wood ornament captures the character of the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands on a piece of hardwood measuring 3.5 by 4 inches. The design includes a cowboy figure, prairie flowers, a skull, and a windmill, all of which fit the open-range landscape of the Sandhills and Pine Ridge country the forest spans.
The design was created specifically for BHPFA by Nestled Pines Woodworking, a studio in Monticello, Wisconsin, that has produced custom ornaments for national parks, state parks, zoos, and nonprofits for more than a decade. Artist and designer Amie Van Susteren creates each design from scratch for the specific site or organization.
The Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands cover 141,864 acres in western and central Nebraska. The forest is managed by the US Forest Service and has two main ranger districts. The Bessey district near Halsey is home to the largest human-planted forest in the United States, originally seeded beginning in 1902 through a collaboration between University of Nebraska botanist Charles Edwin Bessey and Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the Forest Service. The Pine Ridge district in western Nebraska includes Soldier Creek Wilderness and the 6,600-acre Pine Ridge National Recreation Area. BHPFA is the cooperating association for both districts.
