What is this ornament?
This laser-cut wood ornament captures Jewel Cave National Monument in a 3.25-inch piece of hardwood. The design includes five elements tied to the cave experience: elk from the Black Hills above, a bat (one of the cave’s resident species), a hiking boot, a caver’s helmet, and a lantern. Nestled Pines Woodworking in Monticello, Wisconsin, created it specifically for BHPFA using the same process as the other ornaments in this series.
Jewel Cave was established as a National Monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, after prospectors Frank and Albert Michaud discovered it in 1900 by noticing wind rushing from a small opening in the rock. The cave is now the third-longest in the world, with more than 220 miles surveyed as of 2026. Volunteer surveyors have been mapping it for decades, and the total keeps growing. The cave walls are lined with calcite crystals, including dogtooth spar and nailhead spar, which are what give it its name.
