What is this ornament?
A single bison cut from a piece of black walnut, sized to hang from a Christmas tree branch or a rearview mirror. The design is part of BHPFA’s wood ornament and keychain series for our partner sites.
Wind Cave is the place to see free-roaming bison in the southern Black Hills. The herd, around 350 to 400 head today, traces back to 14 bison transferred from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the first bison restoration herds in North America. The park itself was established in 1903 as the seventh national park in the United States and the first park created specifically to protect a cave. If you have stood on the prairie loop and watched a bull cross the road in front of your car, this ornament is a small way to keep that memory in view year-round.

What kind of wood is this?
Black walnut, grown and milled in the USA. The dark grain is the natural color of the wood, with some scorching from the laser engraving on the bison’s coat and features.
Is it painted?
No. The design is laser-cut and laser-engraved into the wood and finished with a non-toxic food-safe oil. The color comes from the walnut itself.
How does it hang?

Will it survive being out year-round?
