What it is
This is the 2021 pin from the Black Hills National Forest Moon Walk program. The design changes every season, and 2021 is the beaver year. It records the 2021 walk season and completes the 2021 spot for anyone collecting across the years.
About the design
The 2021 art shows an American beaver gliding across a green pond, its broad tail trailing behind, under a full moon and stars framed by evergreens. The “Black Hills Moon Walk” banner arcs across the top and the year sits at the bottom. Beaver ponds are one of the recurring stops on the walk program, so the subject ties back to a real Moon Walk destination.
About the Moon Walk program
The Black Hills National Forest has run the Moon Walk program every summer since 1996. On Saturday evenings near the full moon, June through September, rangers and naturalists lead one-mile round-trip hikes to sites across the forest, including beaver ponds, fire lookout towers, old mining towns, and cave entrances. The walks are free, need no registration, and start at dusk. More than 16,000 visitors have attended across about 160 events.
