Description
What it is
This is the 2024 pin from the Black Hills National Forest Moon Walk program. Each season gets its own design, and 2024 is the campsite year. If you walked in 2024 it marks the year you went, and if you are building the set across seasons it is one more design on the board.
About the design
The pin is shaped like an arch. The purple enamel border carries Black Hills Moon Walk in raised silver letters running up one side and down the other, with 2024 across the bottom. Inside the arch is a night scene: a full moon and a sky full of stars, green hills and pines behind a lake, and in the foreground a blue tent pitched next to an orange campfire with smoke rising off it.
About the Moon Walk program
The Moon Walk program has run in the Black Hills National Forest every summer since 1996. On Saturday evenings near the full moon, June through September, rangers and naturalists lead short interpretive hikes to sites across the forest. Locations change through the season, and past walks have covered fire lookout towers, beaver ponds, cave entrances, and Black Hills mining history. The walks are free, family friendly, and need no registration. If you want to go, see this season’s Moon Walk schedule.

Who is this for
Anyone who was out on a 2024 walk, and anyone collecting the series year by year. It is small, light, and easy to mail, so it also works as an easy gift or a stocking stuffer for someone who spends time in the Black Hills. Past seasons sell down and are not reprinted, so this one is available while the last of the 2024 run lasts.
Frequently asked questions
What year is this pin?
It is the 2024 Black Hills Moon Walk pin, and it is dated 2024 on the front. The 2024 artwork is a moonlit campsite with a tent and a campfire.
Is each year a different design?
Yes. Every Moon Walk season gets its own artwork and its own date, and a year is not reprinted once it is gone. That is what makes the older pins worth picking up when you see them.
Can I still attend a Moon Walk?
Yes. The walks are free and open to the public with no registration. See the current Moon Walk schedule for this season’s dates and locations.
Does buying this support the National Forest?
BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.
What kind of backing does the pin use?
It uses a standard butterfly clutch, also called a standard pin back.
