What it is
This is the 2019 pin from the Black Hills National Forest Moon Walk program, the earliest year currently available. Each season carries its own design, and 2019 is the moth year. It marks the 2019 walk season and anchors the start of the collectible run for anyone building the set.
About the design
The 2019 art is a moth with its wings spread wide, detailed in black, cream, and gold, resting above a gold crescent moon that holds the “Black Hills Moon Walk” name and the year. A moth drawn to the moon is a natural fit for an after-dark hiking program.
About the Moon Walk program
The Moon Walk program has run in the Black Hills National Forest since 1996. On Saturday evenings near the full moon, June through September, rangers and naturalists lead one-mile round-trip hikes to different sites across the forest, with topics ranging from fire lookout towers and mining history to beaver dams and cave systems. The walks are free, open to all ages, and require no registration. There is no 2020 pin because the 2020 season was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
