What is this hiking medallion?
A die-cut enameled metal medallion for the Black Hills National Forest, showing the granite spires that rise above the central Black Hills near Sylvan Lake and the Needles Highway. The face is full-color enamel on metal. The reverse is brushed metal with mounting holes for attaching to a wooden hiking stick or walking staff. The die is 1.78″ across.
Made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a Bristol, Tennessee company that has produced hiking medallions for national parks, forests, trails, and historic sites for decades. The Black Hills National Forest approved the design, which is sold through BHPFA.
About the granite spires
The Black Hills granite spires are a group of weathered granite pinnacles in the central Black Hills, formed from Precambrian granite that pushed up through overlying sedimentary rock and then eroded into sharp vertical fins and columns. The best-known groupings are the Cathedral Spires and the Needles, both reachable from Sylvan Lake and the Needles Highway on the south end of the forest. The spires have been a draw for hikers and rock climbers since the early 1900s and are some of the most photographed features in the Black Hills.
The medallion design pulls this imagery directly onto a piece you can carry with you. If you have hiked the Cathedral Spires Trail or driven the Needles Highway, the design is a straight reference.

How to attach it
Pre-drill small pilot holes in your walking stick where the medallion will sit, then press the brads through the medallion and into the holes with a small hammer. The medallion can be gently curved to follow a round staff. For flat surfaces (RV panel, bike frame, display board), leave it flat and use a strong adhesive instead of the brads. Plenty of collectors just leave it mounted on the display card as a keepsake.

About the Black Hills National Forest
The Black Hills National Forest covers about 1.25 million acres across South Dakota and Wyoming. It is managed by the US Forest Service (not the National Park Service) and holds Black Elk Peak at 7,242 feet, the highest point in South Dakota and the Black Hills. Other signature areas include Spearfish Canyon, Pactola Reservoir, the Needles Highway, Sylvan Lake, and the Mickelson Trail corridor.

Is this design sold anywhere else?
The Black Hills National Forest design is specific to BHPFA. Other cooperating associations sell L.W. Bristol medallions for their own parks, but this BHNF medallion is the BHPFA version.
Can I get my Passport to Your National Parks stamped with this?
The hiking medallion is a separate collectible from the Passport program. The Passport to Your National Parks is an NPS-only program. The Black Hills National Forest is a US Forest Service site and does not have a Passport cancellation stamp. If you have a Passport book, you can get stamps at BHPFA’s four NPS partner sites: Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument.
