What are Elk Mini Building Blocks?
A 174-piece building set that snaps together into a bull elk with branching antlers, a thick neck, and a small display base. Pieces are ABS plastic, CPC safety certified. The box includes a printed step-by-step instruction sheet. No glue, no tools. Open the box and start building.
Impact Photographics makes these under The Mini Block brand. The pieces are smaller than standard building bricks (think nano blocks), which is what lets the finished model pick up detail like the tine pattern on the antlers and the bulk of the shoulders at this size. Assembled, the elk stands about 4 1/4 inches tall, good for a desk, shelf, or bookcase.
Elk are one of the signature animals of the country BHPFA supports. Bulls bugle through the ponderosa draws of the Black Hills National Forest every September, and a free-roaming herd shares the mixed-grass prairie with bison at Wind Cave National Park. If you have ever heard a bugle carry across a Black Hills meadow at dawn, this is the animal you were listening to. This set lets you build one at home.

Who is this for?
Kids 7 and up. The pieces are smaller than standard building bricks, so younger builders in the 7 to 9 range may want a parent close by for the antler sections, which have thin branching pieces. Older kids can follow the diagrams on their own. Good rainy-day activity at a cabin, campground, or lodge.
Adults who like detailed model kits. Mini blocks have a following among adult builders who enjoy the patience and finish quality of a small-scale model. The completed elk looks the part on a desk, a cabin mantel, or next to other wildlife collectibles. Expect roughly 1 to 2 hours of build time depending on how comfortable you are with small pieces.

Ages 7 and up. The set contains small parts that are a choking hazard for children under 3. Kids 7 to 9 may need adult help with the thin antler pieces.
How long does it take to build?
Most people finish in 1 to 2 hours. The instructions are color-coded diagrams, so no reading is required once you get started.

Do elk live in the Black Hills?
Yes. The Black Hills elk herd is one of the region’s signature wildlife populations. You will see elk across the Black Hills National Forest, especially in the ponderosa draws and meadow edges at dawn and dusk. A separate free-roaming herd lives on the mixed-grass prairie at Wind Cave National Park, where the animals share the landscape with bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. The bugling season runs from early September into October and is the best time of year to hear them.
What is elk bugling?
A high, rising call that bull elk make during the fall rut to announce themselves to cows and to challenge other bulls. It carries for miles across open country. If you are camping in the Black Hills in September or October, you have a good chance of hearing it before sunrise.
Are elk and deer the same thing?
No, though they are related. Elk (Cervus canadensis) are much larger than white-tailed or mule deer. A mature bull elk can weigh 700 pounds and carry antlers with six or more points on each side. They are the second-largest member of the deer family in North America, after moose.
