About this ferret

The black-footed ferret is North America’s only native ferret species and one of the continent’s most endangered mammals. Declared extinct in 1979, the species got a second chance when a small colony was discovered in Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1981. Since then, a captive breeding program has produced enough animals for reintroduction sites across the western plains.

Douglas, based in Keene, New Hampshire and in business since 1956, designs its plush with an emphasis on accuracy. This ferret has the right proportions, the distinctive black face mask, airbrushed shading on the face and back, and a fuzzy flocked nose. It reads like a black-footed ferret, not a generic weasel.

30 years of recovery

2026 marks 30 years since the USFWS reintroduction program began placing captive-bred ferrets back into the wild. Wind Cave National Park, one of BHPFA’s partner sites, received its first ferrets in 2007: 49 animals released into the park’s mixed-grass prairie. The park can support 40 to 60 ferrets depending on the prairie dog population, since prairie dogs make up roughly 90% of a black-footed ferret’s diet and provide the burrows where ferrets shelter and raise their young.

The Conata Basin in the Nebraska National Grasslands now holds the largest wild population of black-footed ferrets in the world. In 2026, the National Grasslands Visitor Center in Wall, SD (a BHPFA-operated store location) is hosting a student poster contest marking the 30th anniversary of ferret recovery. BHPFA provides the prize basket, and the contest has been covered by KOTA-TV and other regional outlets. Is the coloring accurate?
