What is it
This is the Wind Cave National Park design in the Travel Stamps collectible series. Travel Stamps are vinyl decals drawn to look like postage stamps, but they are not postage. Each one is a colorfully illustrated keepsake sized about four times larger than a Forever Stamp, made for displaying in a collection book, binder, or anywhere you want to mark a visit. The Wind Cave design is an official NPS-approved stamp sold at the park’s visitor center store.
What is on the stamp
Heidi Michele’s illustration shows the two sides of Wind Cave together: a bison grazing the mixed-grass prairie above ground, and a staircase descending into the cave below, with the rolling Black Hills on the horizon. The “Wind Cave NP” banner and a perforated stamp edge complete the postage-stamp look.
About Wind Cave National Park
Wind Cave became the seventh national park in the United States on January 9, 1903, and the first anywhere established to protect a cave. It holds an estimated 95% of the world’s known boxwork, the honeycomb calcite fins that make the cave easy to recognize, across roughly 161 miles of surveyed passage. Above ground, the park protects mixed-grass prairie and a free-roaming bison herd descended from 14 animals brought from the Bronx Zoo in 1913, one of the earliest bison restoration efforts in North America.
