Description
What is the Stories in Stone pin collection?
This is a set of five enamel lapel pins depicting the landmarks of the Black Hills and Badlands region: Devils Tower, Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, and Badlands. Each pin shows a different site in colorful enamel on metal with a brushed finish reverse. Sold together as a set of five for $15.00, about $3 per pin. If you want all five on your bag, jacket, or display, this is the way to get them.
The pins are made by L.W. Bristol Classics, a Tennessee-based manufacturer that produces custom souvenir pins and medallions for national and state parks across the country. This set is sold through BHPFA’s park stores at Wind Cave and Jewel Cave, and through this online shop.
The “Stories in Stone” design also appears on a baseball cap and a t-shirt. The same five sites, same general design concept. If the pins catch your eye, check the rest of the collection.
What’s in the set
The five pins cover five distinct sites in the region, each with a different geological and cultural story:
- Devils Tower (Wyoming). An igneous rock column that rises 867 feet above the Belle Fourche River. Formed when magma intruded through sedimentary rock and cooled slowly, leaving the characteristic hexagonal columns. The surrounding softer rock eroded away, exposing the formation. It became the first U.S. National Monument in 1906.
- Jewel Cave (South Dakota). The third-longest cave in the world, with more than 220 miles of mapped passages as of 2026. Named for the calcite crystals lining its walls. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Jewel Cave National Monument.
- Mount Rushmore (South Dakota). The granite memorial with the carved faces of four presidents, completed in 1941. The carving removed about 450,000 tons of rock from the cliff face over 14 years of work directed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum.
- Wind Cave (South Dakota). About 161 miles of surveyed passages, making it the 7th-longest cave in the world and the first national park established specifically to protect a cave. Contains approximately 95% of the world’s known boxwork formations. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park.
- Badlands (South Dakota). Eroded buttes, spires, and gullies exposing millions of years of sedimentary layers. One of the richest fossil beds in North America, with remains of early horses, rhinoceroses, and saber-toothed cats. The landscape changes continuously as erosion removes about an inch of material per year.

Who is this for?
The full-set format is aimed at collectors and gift buyers rather than someone who just wants one pin. If you’ve visited all five sites, the set makes sense as a record of those trips. If you’re buying a gift for someone with a Black Hills trip planned or completed, a set is more satisfying than a single pin and the price is reasonable.
Pin collectors who follow the L.W. Bristol Classics line will recognize the format. The company makes similar sets for other park regions; this is the Black Hills and Badlands version.
The pins are small enough (13/16″ x 1 1/8″ each) to work on a lapel, hat, jacket, or bag. Standard clutch-back attachment. At 1.6 oz total for the set, weight is not a consideration.
Frequently asked questions
Are these pins sold individually, or only as a set?
The Stories in Stone Pin Collection is sold as a set of five. Individual pins from other BHPFA sites (including separate Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, and Scotts Bluff pins) are available in the collectibles section. If you want just one or two of the five, check there first.
How big are the pins?
Each pin is approximately 13/16″ wide by 1 1/8″ tall, about the size of a large thumbnail. The full set ships in a package measuring 10″ x 4″.
How do I attach the pins without damaging my jacket?
Each pin has a standard post-and-clutch backing. Thread the post through the fabric from the front, then press the clutch back onto the post from the inside. For lightweight fabrics, use a small backing card or foam pad behind the fabric to distribute the pressure across a larger area.
Can I get my Passport to Your National Parks stamped at these sites?
Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument both have Passport cancellation stamps at their visitor centers. BHPFA also carries both the Passport Classic Edition and the Collector’s Edition. Note: Passport stamps are NPS sites only. Mount Rushmore and Badlands have their own cooperating associations and stamps but are not BHPFA partner sites.
Does buying this support national parks?
Yes. BHPFA is the official nonprofit partner of Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument, and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, as well as the Black Hills National Forest and Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands. Proceeds from every purchase support education programs, conservation projects, and visitor services at these sites.
Is this part of a larger collection?
Yes. The Stories in Stone design also appears on a baseball cap in denim blue or khaki ($26.99) and a t-shirt in adult and youth sizes. All three use the same five-park design: Devils Tower, Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave, and Badlands.
Are there other pin options in the BHPFA store?
Yes. BHPFA sells a range of individual site pins, including pins for Jewel Cave, Wind Cave, Scotts Bluff, Black Elk Wilderness, and more. See the full pins collection for all options. Individual pins are generally $4.99 each; this set of five is $15.00.
