What is the Hudson-Meng Bison Art T-Shirt?
The print shows a bison walking to the right. The body of the bison is open, and inside it you can see a bison skeleton standing on a prairie under a sky with a yellow sun and gold swirling clouds. The skeleton is drawn in gold against the grassland. The bison’s legs, head, horns, and shaggy fur are inked in dark navy. Below it, in hand-drawn lettering: “Hudson-Meng Education & Research Center.”
The design references the Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed, one of the largest bison bonebeds of its age in the western hemisphere. The site preserves the remains of up to 600 bison from an extinct Plains Bison species that died roughly 10,000 years ago. Whether the bison were killed by Paleo-Indian hunters or died from natural causes is still debated. The Hudson-Meng Education & Research Center sits on the Oglala National Grassland in northwestern Nebraska, about 20 miles northwest of Crawford. Visitors can see the actual bone bed through a viewing window in the center.
