What is it
This is the Jewel Cave National Monument design in the Travel Stamps collectible series. Travel Stamps are vinyl decals drawn to look like postage stamps, but they are not postage. Each one is a colorfully illustrated keepsake sized about four times larger than a Forever Stamp, made for displaying in a collection book, binder, or anywhere you want to mark a visit. The Jewel Cave design is an official NPS-approved stamp sold at the monument’s visitor center store.
What is on the stamp
Heidi Michele’s illustration looks down a passage of Jewel Cave, with a ribbon of orange and red flowstone known as “cave bacon” running alongside the pale, knobby calcite formations the cave is named for. The “Jewel Cave NM” banner and a perforated stamp edge complete the postage-stamp look.
About Jewel Cave National Monument
Jewel Cave is the third-longest cave in the world, with more than 220 miles mapped and the survey still growing. It sits in the Black Hills of South Dakota on US-16 between Custer and Newcastle, and was discovered in 1900 by brothers Frank and Albert Michaud, who felt wind rushing from a small opening. Rangers lead the paved Scenic Tour, the candlelit Historic Lantern Tour, and the off-trail Wild Caving Tour.
